Hey the Leafs had the last years of Quinn, Ferguson, Burke and Nonis. Leaf fans suffered through more" Chiarelli's" than most teams.

That's pretty funny since Chiarelli was your GM the last time you won the Cup

Roster was pretty much handed to him. he didnt make any moves that you or i couldnt make. You could have traded for chris kelly, you could have given chara a massive contract in FA. I mean just look at the moves that were made. you and i could make 99% of them ourselves and probably get better returns...

I'm not justifying the overpayment of Nylander and Matthews, but the Leafs cap issues have more to do with Marleau and maybe Zaitsev who were signed by Lou. Kessel, his signing and trade and therefore retention goes back to Burke/Nonis, pre Dubas.

im just here to trigger ppl bud. he's an OK gm. I don't blame lou that, because that's easy to do. tavares signing is great, but that 10.5 in cap space is the reason the leafs are in a cap conundrum. i still think nylander gets traded though. he can fetch a good defenseman

it was the market at that time. they might regret it down the road, cause the kings used that pick on tobias bjornfot, and tbh its still to early to say how grundstrom or durzi will turn out.

Actually I've been championing the trading of Nylander since he was resigned. Might be the best way way to get cap space. But even at that not sure if the Leafs with their cap issue can really get difference maker on defence this year....maybe just a shot term fix. Maybe just crossing the fingers on Reilly, Dermot, Sandin, Liljegren maybe Rosen, Duzak, and the cap space Muzzin provides and Zaitsev or his cap space in 2020/21. IMO at the Leafs are going to have trouble making the playoffs in the coming season....If no Gardiner, Hainsey and the injured Dermot.

not only do the leafs need cap space for marner right now and/or defensemen, but in 2 years, andersen is up. after that rielly is up. 2 years after that, matthews is up. long term, thye need to free up cap space as well. on top of that, other teams in the atlantic are and metro are getting better. rangers, panthers, habs, maybe even sabers. if leafs want to win, they need to win quick, cause teh teams that are coming up, have star potnetial not only up front, but defense as well

I mean obviously over 6 years the team will have turnover. He gave out MASSIVE contracts to chara and savard immediately upon being GM (jeff gorton actually made the agreements chiarelli just inked it) anyone could have done that. he traded a stud young winger that for some reason he thought would only be a 3rd liner in blake wheeler and an established defenseman in stuart to the thrashers for rich peverly and cap space to trade for tomas kaberle who was essentially benched by the time the playoffs came around. He traded a 2nd round pick for chris kelly. He traded a 1st, a 3rd and an established offensive defenseman in wideman for an injury prone horton and greg campbell. he traded phil kessel for 2 firsts and a 2nd (pretty good move). Chiarelli could draft but he was also consistently picking in the top half of the draft... he hit on marchand in the 3rd round. but he traded joe thornton. he already had bergeron. He got mark recchi because he was aging and tampa wanted to get rid of the contract. he got seidenberg for a 2nd. He traded for an overpaid sturm. Look at the moves from 2006-2011. But please, tell me more about how we wouldnt have won the cup without his moves, WHEN ANYONE could have made those deals.

the only two deals i will give him ANY shred of credit for is the raycroft for rask trade, and the trade that landed us boychuk.
