You can't trade an AHL Player for an NHL Player and add a 4th rounder to make it fair lol

Especially considering by the time that 4th rolls around in 2022, odds are we'll all be dead...

@cap2018champs

Who said he's an AHLer. No one said johnson is bad. He's a decent defensive defenseman. His contract could be cheaper though and it shouldnt be as long. This is worse for a team that doesnt need the extra cap hit right now (like pittsburgh). And what makes you think coglianos value is so good when he was traded for just devin shore. And theyre the same cap hit. An argument can obviously be made for why cogliano is the best choice of the two which is why picks exist. But penguins will be feeling a little deprived of a hagelin type player. And the Stars need a depth defender.

Cogliano is quite valuable maybe slightly overpaid. His skating is still very strong and age hasn't hit him badly. JJ has among the worst metrics for qualified D-Men. The salary isn't the issue on the trade since its equal, but Cogliano will be good through his contract. JJ is buyout material now, better yet in 2-3 years. You'd have to really make it worth Dallas' while (1st maybe 2nd Rounder) to take on JJ or really any team to take him on since he is buyout proof due to a 8 year payout period as of now.

Eye test proves hes not as bad as you may think. Plus he was playing his off-hand for a chunk of the season. Even though salary isnt the issue in your eyes. Pens fans probably wouldnt care if he is on the team or not if he was making a million dollars a year or less. Why would anyone at that salary. And on top of being overpaid a bit the term is still long as you said he might be worse in 2 or 3 years while coglianos contract is done by then. A higher pick may be needed to get the deal done or just several picks bieng involved rather than just the one from the pens

Cogliano had a whooping 6 goals and 17 points last year getting paid 3+ million. I'm not sure the word value relates anywhere near that.
It's an over inflated salary for an over inflated salary.
I don't view either contract as being over 2 years because of the expansion draft.
