This is about as incorrect as the statement that he'd be waiting for the Pens specifically

Gardiner is okay. And that's fine what's wrong with that. His main criticism is that hes not a top pair guy.

Guess you missed watching the playoffs when he consistently got beat when he was on the ice and made more mistakes than contributions

This team would be tough to beat. Not sure those trades would be accepted by ducks and wild and think Gardiner comes in higher than 5.5 but would love that team

I would take Guentzel as he is cheaper and we have enough elite level players to drive the play. Marner is of course the better player but will want to be paid as such.

Yeah or any 7-game sample size where Malking/Crosby/Letang/whoever is bad. Such a pointless mentality, I watched him plenty throughout the year, and he was still the 2nd best Leafs defenseman over the season

No your mentality is pointless. Im not talking about a 7 game sample, I'm talking about year after year in the playoffs. And being the 2nd best defenseman on the leafs doesn't make him good considering how bad their defense is. Thats like saying Justin Shultz is a great defenseman because he's the 3rd best on the penguins. Theres a reason why teams aren't giving him the contract he wants

Gardiner has had 2, 2.2 and 2.3 WAR (EW) over the last 3 seasons, this idea that players are suddenly bad in the playoffs is ridiculous. The Leafs have all been bad in that case, and really it's just about playing a better team. They also went to 7 games with the Bruins, who went to 7 games with the champs. Like I'm not some Leaf fan going "look we were so close to winning the cup", I'm actually a Boston fan, but I'd be delusional to think any Boston-Toronto match up in the last few years was far removed from a coin flip.

I honestly agree with your point - it says absolutely nothing in that sense, at least without context, but Dermott is an actual good defenseman as well. The Leafs doesn't have the tirefire D everyone makes it out to be, at least not before losing Gardiner. It's probably slightly below average to average

Schultz is indeed a great defenseman. The Penguins simply don’t have the cap space to resign him, so he will walk. It maybe true that recent injuries have taken a toll on his play, but he’s improved so much on the physical and defensive side of his game since coming from the Oilers. His play was terrific in the 2017 and 2018 playoffs. Why do you believe he is not good?
