Description

Suppose the Leafs face an offer sheet on Marner. The 21 man roster shown here provides the maximum flexibility they can handle by weaponizing their lowest cost options in the bottom 6 and third pair/reserve WITHOUT .trading a player to create cap space.

It can handle an offer sheet of up to $11.395M. My range for Marner's actual market value is $8.9M - $9.4M, so that's a major insurance buffer. An offer sheet is simply not going anywhere against the Leafs. You can see now the extra benefit gained by moving Marleau, Zaitsev, and Brown.

This is not an ideal roster by any means but it is not that bad either compared to the higher cost options available.

Recent FA signings like Agozzino and Spezza helped make this roster feasible. A range of higher cost options like Moore, Shore, and Mikheyev are available once the Marner negotiations are completed.

There is one trade option available as well: Cody Ceci and his $4.5M contract.

IF that would happen I would hope that he has a great year and trade him next summer. No reason for him to be over $10M

There was exactly 1 94 point player on the Leafs last year, he can make over 10. That's fine, guys like Kapanan wanting than they got is problems. You almost can't overpay a star player but you can overpay everyone else. The Leafs aren't doing that, they have zero bad contracts right now. Marner will be great and they have a great team.

I very much doubt the Leafs would match such an offer but the fact that they CAN match it is the insurance deterrent, along with the fact that the team paying over-market has to provide 4 firsts.
Add in the fact that a term over 5 years (eg 7) has to have the AAV inflated by Term/5 and Marner's camp has reportedly asked for no long term offers, and it's hard to imagine any team being interested.
