GMBM growing a pair

Description
If there was a time for Bob Murray to be exciting it would be right now. Send Carlo an offer sheet of at least $4mil and go from there. IF he accepts and Boston matches then at least he tried to make the defense better. I personally think Boston Matches the offer sheet and then they focus on McAvoy after.

Love the idea of signing Carlo but ducks need a scorer. Comtois & Mahura will likely be in San Diego next year (sadly). Jones will be in there & I really want to see Hakanpaa. Hopefully the ducks rid themselves of Shore, Ritchie, Del Zotto, Deslauriers, & Martinsen. And does anyone know if Eaves is going to play next year?

I think Comtois makes the roster out of camp, again. Mahura will be battling Larsson for that last spot.

If the ducks can solidify that top 4 defense and add a scorer they will be good.

Eaves is either going to be on IR or start the season in the AHL.

Why would Murray try to sign a player to an offer sheet when he knows the other team would match? Why would Carlo (or any RFA for that matter) sign an offer sheet with the Ducks in the first place that wasn't an absolute over-payment? I get the idea of offer sheets are fun to speculate about but this team that isn't even that aggressive with UFAs will never be that aggressive with other team's RFAs. I mean, look how he treats his own? He put Ritchie over a barrel last year and won. Spectacularly. I can't think of anything more fruitless for this franchise to engage in right now than an offer sheet, especially in a rebuilding year.

Del Zotto, Deslauriers and Martinsen were all just acquired. Seems kind of pointless to look to move them before they've even played. They're also role players who are all just going to be spares anyway. And Shore and Ritchie are each on really cheap contracts and produce at decent rate for those prices (Ritchie especially). I see no burning need to move these players. There's room for them all most of the young guys to make the team. Eaves will probably never play hockey again.

tbh i think the ducks need to break down and start going to high level prospects. i don't see their current core of players being truly impactful.

It's called your job is on the line if this team doesn't make a quick turn around or shows some kind of improvement this year. Carlo isn't worth an over payment in my eyes. I, however, do believe this team needs to make some kind of improvement on the right side of defense. Whether that be making an offer sheet or a trade it doesn't matter how it happens, it just needs to happen.
Ritchie wasn't worth more than what he got. How times did he take some stupid penalty in the 3rd period in the offensive zone? Before this last year, it was a ton. As fans we all knew Ritchie was going to take a dumb penalty in the third. I wouldn't call it fruitless.

I would love to have Comtois start the year on the team, but how do you make room for him?

I agree with you on Ritchie but for the rest why If they are all going to be spares why sign them? Ducks have plenty of prospects and not enough roster spots as it is. Shore scored only 12 points in 35 games which is about 30 points in 82 games for $2.5MM (he doesnt play PP or PK & is below average in Faceoffs). Again why not play prospects for less than half the price?

Who says his job is on the line? The Samueli's just signed him to an extension. The championship window we were in for more than a decade has closed. This is a transition phase now. This team needs to build, not make rash decisions for that could derail the process of rebuilding this team. The expectation isn't playoffs or bust this year. That would be great but the most important thing is that this team improves and that the next wave of young forwards cement their spots on the team. Taking a swing at a player that wouldn't sign here anyway is not conducive to achieving that. Plus, it's not like we're a Brandon Carlo away from being a contender. Why waste the assets?

Because you need spares. Injuries happen (which we as Ducks fans know all too well) plus the spots reserved for regular scratches need to be filled by guys like these. Would you rather Comtois or Jones was getting scratched every night instead or Deslauriers? Plus they're really cheap. If they can't hack it with the Ducks they'll just get waived and sent to San Diego. I really see no issue acquiring these players.

You already have a plethora of bottom six forwards (Shore, Rowney, Grant, Ritchie, Sprong, Sherwood) . I think GMBM is going to keep Comtois in SD next year, just like he did with Steele & Jones last year (praying that i am wrong). Injuries do happen but it seems that the ducks have solved that after having everyone miss the first half of last season. The way I see it, you could send Comtois to SD, have a full roster and still have Grant & Sherwood scratched. Are they planning on sending Deslauriers/Martinsen to SD? Not ideal players to have prospects learn from? I really just cannot find a good reason to bring these guys in unless half the forwards get hurt. But even GMBM planned by bringing in Potularski (AHL playoff MVP) & Blake Pietila (scored 25 goals in AHL), I would rather give them a shot then 2 players who scored a combined 5 goals last year.

The way I see the roster standing today is Deslauriers and Grant are the scratched, 13th and 14th forwards, and Del Zotto is the 6th/7th. That leaves a spot for Comtois or Jones and may the best man win. Considering Comtois is but 20 years old I don't think it'll be devastating if he has to start the year in San Diego. Or Jones if he loses that spot to Comtois. But say they both play so well they make the team, then you waive Deslauriers and stash him in the minors until we need him. Because I've got news for you, nobody "solves" injury problems. I can't imagine next season will be as bad as last year but injuries will happen. Sherwood doesn't factor into this equation at all. In fact I think he should be dangled as trade bait.

Bottom line is these are the kind of players you want to be your spares. Because if we have the roster you'd prefer then guys like Shore, Ritchie or Sprong are scratched. I'd much rather have dudes who probably belong in the AHL watching from the press box then guys with actual talent.
