Ryan for Backes

Created by: shmoeman
Team: 2019-20 Boston Bruins
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 28, 2019
Published: Jul. 28, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
So why do both teams do this deal?
OTT- Backes is making very minimal REAL money so OTT ends up saving money in the short term and long term. Ryan also has an extra year on his deal
BOS- moving Backes without giving up something very substantial is next to impossible. Ive always loved Backes and his leadership but having 6 mill invested into a player with minimal output. While Ryan is vastly overpaid at 7 mill, Ryan at 5 million is a lot more tolerable. Obviously it sucks to take on an extra year of 5 mill but at that point Ryan will be a lot easier to move if it comes to that and the Bs will also have a lot more cap with Krejci coming off the books. This trade makes the Bruins better and also frees up a bit of cap in the shorter term.

Couple notes on the players
Backes- Obviously this trade all depends on Backes waiving his NTC. If the Bruins tell him its either the AHL or OTT, I cant help but think he would got to OTT to be a real mentor for the younger players on the team and who knows, maybe the Sens can make a little noise in the last year of Backes' deal
Ryan- crazy amounts of skill just has always been something off about his game. I think he could really step up his game playing with guys like Bergy and Marchand or in more of a sheltered 3rd line with skilled players. Bruins fans also know how good this guy can be in the playoffs.

The Mcavoy contract may be a little light but when his contract runs out the Bs will have all of Ryans $ to basically give to Mcavoy. He has very little leverage now and I think the contract makes sense for both sides.

OTT would decline that, simply because Backes is of no use for them but Ryan's still decent 40 point guy.

Not to mention they wouldn't retain salary AND take the worse player.

Not worth it to save 1m. Backes buyout next year is cheaper than this. If you want to throw a little something something there way and they retain half. Go for it. But Sens decline either deal anyway.

I get the idea, and Ryan did have 42 points on a horrendous team, so i think with the right guys he could have something in the tank. I just dont think the million dollars less the next two years is worth the five million on the books the third year when Backes' contract would be up, especially with the guys that need to be signed in the next 2 years. Good thought though.

Sens should get a pretty decent kicker. Bobby Ryan is a very useful player, and getting him at 5mil AND getting out from Backes is worth something decent even if Bobby has the extra year.

That's why I'm so against any swap of bad contracts involving Bobby Ryan. Sens are always going to get a much worse player, and they get no value back because he has a bigger contract. I'm still firmly in the "Bobby For Captain" camp.

BOS would win only $750K but add a year so not so much interesting for BOS also
