Steps to get out of the cap crunch

Created by: rja
Team: 2019-20 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 30, 2019
Published: Jul. 30, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Because it seems that no teams are interested in Strome or Namestnikov through a trade, and because a Shattenkirk buyout would be harmful long term, I would do the following steps to get out of the cap crunch:

1) Buy out Staal
2) Trade Kreider w/ Beleskey
3) Bury Smith

For trades, I am not posting the returns; I can leave that up to your imaginations.

I understand that Strome and Deangelo should be moved on the right side, but I believe Deangelo has played and can play the left, and Strome will just have to adjust.

Rather than buying out Shattenkirk, Staal makes more sense financially. I think if you are looking long term (which NYR should be), the front office will recognize that they really cannot keep Kreider long term (his extension will be very burdensome by the time you need to resign the youth). I think moving Kreider and packaging Beleskey to get rid of another 825k is a move that will help them long term. That may lower the return a little, but I still think you'll get a good return.

    1. Beleskey, Matt
    2. Kreider, Chris
    Additional Details:
Beleskey is only a 825k cap hit because the other team will also bury him.

Picked the Flames just an example; other teams that may be interested could be MTL, NSH, STL, and maybe MIN.

The best thing the Rangers can do is go ALL IN. They have so many pieces they could send to get a star player back.
    DeAngelo + Buchnevich + Kravtsov + Rykov + 2020 1st plus 2021 2nd for Patrick Kane. BOOM

Trading Kreider in a manner that reduces his return by attaching a 825k cap reduction is silly. Full agree on buyout staal bury smith.

Normally I would agree, but an 825k alleviation would be great for NYR right. Plus, it would not be that big of a reduction in price.

You could also possibly get creative with Beleskey and trade for an AHL player. Maybe EDM wants to add veteran leadership to their forward group in Bakersville and would trade someone like Keegan Lowe (just an example really do not know much about Lowe), and you can get rid of the 825k that way. But I do not see that happening.

Looking at your account, you seem like someone who is fairly educated when it comes to the NHL. I’ve got to tell you, whatever this idea you have of us going all in right now, it’s not a good idea.

Kreider is our most valuable player on the block. We shouldn’t attach a cap dump to him (no matter how minimal) in order to maximize the value we receive.
Also, a Smith buyout and Strome trade would be just fine. It would be much simpler to Frost than this, although your suggestion is not bad. If people take Namestnikov, then great. Otherwise, we trade Strome, who would certainly gauge some interest on the trade market. Get a 2nd or 3rd for him too.

Yeah see I would totally agree if I was confident Strome could be traded. I do not think teams want to sacrifice assets for him; otherwise I think it would have happened by now.

And with regards to adding Beleskey - I really do not think it's going to change the price that much. We are talking about maybe a change in the conditions on a pick if a pick comes back. I think teams would pay roughly about the same for approx 5.4 for a year of Kreider as a year of him at 4.65.

    Also @csick was joking.

Oh yeah I agree for sure. I was joking but I mean signing Panarin and getting Trouba kind of accelerated the window a bit. But yeah they need that money that frees up in the next 2 years to re-sign Chytil, Kakko, Howden, georgiev, etc. The good thing about the situation for the Rangers is the fact they have so much money off the books in the next few years. Youre talking about over 30 mill in the next 2 years are freed up. So, its better to keep it for the guys on ELCs

Your right about Kreider. I disagree on Strome though. I think they are tying to keep him which is why he ain’t moved. I see him as an expendable asset.

I saw some guy post the same trade (I’m guessing it was you and the joke blew over my head). And yes I agree that we must save our cap for rookies
