They won't, or they won't do it. His situation is completely different than Marleau's. He is closer to Callahan's.

It took the Leafs a first to move Marleau with 1 year left, it will take more than a 2nd to move Backes

Still gonna need more than a second. Ottawa isn’t just gonna waste money for something that isn’t worth it

The thing is Melnyk could save real money. Melnyk could care less about the Cap hit. He cares about what comes out of his pocket. Backes Salary is 1m this year and 3m next. If the Bruins took back salary greater than 4m, he would do it.

He could flip Callahan for Backes now and everyone is happy. Melynyk has less out of pocket expenses. Bruins get Cap relief.

Yes I agree with that but that wasn’t the original trade

Ok - Backes and Marleau are not comparables. Look at the Callahan deal.
    - Marleau said he will not play wherever he is traded unless SJ.
    - Toronto needed to move immediately. They moved Three pretty big contracts and still needed money. They needed to be in a position to protect themselves against an offersheet and sign important guys.
    - Real money vs. Cap hit are different. Marleau's 1 year of salary (not cap hit) is 250K more than 2 years of Backes because of how it's structured.

They aren't close to the floor next year, this is a way for Melnyk to get there on the cheap

Massive pass on that Schenn deal. I'd rather try to keep Coyle for 1M less than that. Giving up a first for a comparable player is bizarre.

They are incredibly close in defensive impacts and Coyle outscores Schenn at EV, total points is skewed by PP production.

This website lowers the cap hit when placed on ltir to make it simple for us. But it’s not how it actually works. Ltir players still count towards the cap but it allows u to spend X amount of dollars over if you’re close to it. Ex. Toronto. Therefore they are above the cap floor

Melnyk can't get insurance unless they're on LTIR, also that still puts them at 56M!
