Why? Gardiner and his agent are probably sitting on several very good offers and he hasn't signed because he is waiting on an offer from Toronto. Now if that is the case I don't think any players would be angry about it. Now I could seeing it pissing off every other GM in the league. I'm not sure if there the rules that cover this scenario. Does the League have a blanket rule that allows them to veto a trade that was clearly made to circumvent the cap?

Even if it is legal I really can't see any GM actually doing this it just isn't worth pissing off the other 29 GMs not involved.

If Detroit signs someone and then instantly trades them away, why would any free agent want to sign with Detroit? For all they know, they could just get moved too

In my scenario Gardiner wants to play in Toronto. So by signing, retaining and then trading him Detroit is doing a lot to help a player that has never played for Detroit. When you help a player like the word spreads pretty quick.

Now we are discussing a scenario that will never happen.

Detroit would get screwed hard by the NHL in the end for this cap circumvention. Most likely in the form of forfeiting valuable draft picks.
