EDM
  1. Dumba, Matt

I would love this trade if it goes through. If Chiarelli becomes their GM maybe but if I were Min I wouldn't accept this trade. Dumba is probably a top 20 defender in the NHL right now and under a very decent contract so I think you would have to add more. Bouchard and Broberg are nonstarters. Maybe moving the first to this year and adding Yamamoto instead of Kassian would do it. Would you still do this trade with these changes?

Minnesota laughs and declines as JP has 100+ nhl games, that’s kinda not a prospect anymore. That’s you basically trading your garbage (benning and kassian) with a 1st for Dumba, which is like me offering Tim Heed Melker Karlsson Suomela plus a first for Klefbom. And the flames would like cap space, they don’t want Russell < Frolik while addin cap, not helping their situation

Benning JP Yamamoto 1st 2020 and 2nd to 3rd 2020 does seem more fair yes

The fact that you refer to Benning as "garbage" tells me you don't know much about hockey in general and the Oilers in particular.

If they're looking to rebuild then I think that offer is decent value, if they aren't rebuilding though it's kind of a pointless move by the Wild.

Minnesota would be looking for quality though, think of it this way, Pool Party is basically worth a 2nd round pick at this point, Kassian and Benning are worth a 3rd each, maybe, and Edmontons 1st with Dumba playing with them is likely from 16 and up. So you're giving nothing elite for an elite player, easy no.

Yeah, I don't think Benning is that far behind Dumba that a 1st and Puljujarvi don't make up the difference. Here are some numbers to illustrate what I'm saying:

Over the past 3 seasons combined, 5v5 stats:

Dumba | Stat | Benning

0.35 | Goals/60 | 0.22
0.69 | Assists/60 | 0.59
1.04 | Points/60 | 0.81
48.39 | CF% | 50.59
48.48 | FF% | 50.37
49.58 | SF% | 50.46
55.63 | GF% | 54.44
51.93 | xGF% | 50.96
51.11 | SCF% | 50.46
52.57 | HDCF% | 49.58
22.5 | EV_GAR | 16.3
29.6 | GAR | 22.0
5.5 | WAR | 4.0

Based on (say) 1500 minutes per season at 5v5, you're trading a guy who can be expected to score 9 goals and 26 points for a guy who will score 6 goals and 20 points. Not a big difference, really. Dumba's PP acumen makes him more valuable again, but Puljujarvi + 1st round pick - especially one that isn't top-10 protected - should easily make up the difference. And he's added Kassian + a 3rd (potentially a 2nd) on top!

As I said before, I don't think MIN does this unless they're doing a full-on rebuild, because Dumba is clearly the best player in the trade. But I do think that the value of the deal is fine.

The fact that you say someone doesn’t like benning making them not know much is laughable.

Did you look at the post above? Most of Benning's 5v5 stats are better than Dumba's except for goals and points - and those are close. The only area Dumba has a clear advantage is on the power play, and Edmonton has a better right-handed PP QB coming this winter in Evan Bouchard.

Fellas i really like this discussion on this trade, thats what i was looking for. I think everyone on both sides have very valid points which logically makes this trade somewhat do able, now i do think minnesota might have wanted more but in the end its a GMS job to sell a trade and get the best end of it, i had toyed with adding another pick or prospect to the mix but id prob want a lesser pick coming back. I am not a benning fan but he is actually not that bad and took a big step forward last year, i think him and kassian provide minnesota with suitable roster players and kassian is an improvement on a few of their players that are looking to start. I wouldn't want to send yamamoto and JP in the same trade but i would consider sending a prospect like gambardella or maybe one tier less. However I do think Minny is going to change a ton this year and Dumba might be available.

I think the thing people are overlooking is the fact that they are freeing up 6 million in space allocated to 1 player and using 2/3 of it to sign two useful roster players for the season and then getting some assets in the process. While Dumba is a solid Dman i do not think he is in the upper echelon and this trade is fairly close.

I think the flames would take russell personally, he is a serviceable d man that can play both sides and fill in the top 4, hes got vet leadership and they still save 300 k on frolik as well as getting a prospect and a pick. For the next two years it provides them with a useful dman and next yea rhe can be traded easy enough so not a huge commitment.
