I am a longtime oil fan but I don’t see this happening unless the oil kicked in more pieces and value. if they did buying rask out is a terrible move in my opinion, he can still be effective in many spots in the oilers line up, still has potential, term and youth. you have way to much tied up in tweeners including 2.675 mil on the bench, Rasks buyout costs 2.925, you have room to keep rask.
Bouchard and persson can rotate for their 9 games but unless Bouchard wows people he should be sent down, truly even if he does he should be sent down. Rask gagner, nygard, granlund, jujjhar, brassard, kass, and donato and haas should all be fighting tooth and nail for ice time, this will raise the compete level. If you have to dump cap gagner is on an early expiring deal and has value, start with

That’s you basically trading your garbage (benning and kassian) with a 1st for Dumba, which is like me offering Tim Heed Melker Karlsson Suomela plus a first for Klefbom. And the flames would like cap space, they don’t want Russell < Frolik while addin cap, not helping their situation</div></div>
I think the flames would take russell personally, he is a serviceable d man that can play both sides and fill in the top 4, hes got vet leadership and they still save 300 k on frolik as well as getting a prospect and a pick. For the next two years it provides them with a useful dman and next yea rhe can be traded easy enough so not a huge commitment.

Fellas i really like this discussion on this trade, thats what i was looking for. I think everyone on both sides have very valid points which logically makes this trade somewhat do able, now i do think minnesota might have wanted more but in the end its a GMS job to sell a trade and get the best end of it, i had toyed with adding another pick or prospect to the mix but id prob want a lesser pick coming back. I am not a benning fan but he is actually not that bad and took a big step forward last year, i think him and kassian provide minnesota with suitable roster players and kassian is an improvement on a few of their players that are looking to start. I wouldn't want to send yamamoto and JP in the same trade but i would consider sending a prospect like gambardella or maybe one tier less. However I do think Minny is going to change a ton this year and Dumba might be available.
I think the thing people are overlooking is the fact that they are freeing up 6 million in space allocated to 1 player and using 2/3 of it to sign two useful roster players for the season and then getting some assets in the process. While Dumba is a solid Dman i do not think he is in the upper echelon and this trade is fairly close.

I think Connor is prob asking for 8 8.5 long term right now so that makes sense, he will have to come down a bit, that Hayes contract kind of inflated things for those 50-65 pt guys and Laine at 9 long term is a bit scary but make sense, he can score but I’m not sure he has that drive to play at an elite level for 8 more years

Fair enough, there’s a few teams this trade could be made with and if we kept russell it has no real impact this year. Russell is undervalued in ways so him and kulikov are not far off but that makes sense, how much do Connor and Laine sign for this year?

Hence the addition of the picks and extra prospect, in the real world its a gms job to Sell his trade and the saving of 2 million in switching gagner for namest and the assets involved is why i made that trade. If the oil had to retain a bit more salary they would but i think gagner would interest rangers at 1.75 or 2 mill

A 3rd and a cheap to bury cap dump like Brodziak or Manning should be more then enough, Namestnikov didn't put up any more then Vesey did and he went for a 3rd. Pulujarvi and picks is way too much plus the Rangers aren't gonna want Gagner' cap hit, at least Mannings or Brodziaks are almost nothing when buried, Gagner's would still be like a $2M hit I think if he's sent down.</div></div>

Gagner was on pace for 33 pts last year so he’s still a serviceable winger who can play almost anywhere, he works hard and plays smart plus he’s ufa at end of year too so it’s less risky. The 4th was supposed to be conditional in that namest had to put up 45 pts to get the 4th. As for JP his value is low so it’s not as bad. Namest still has potential and can play top 6 now it’s a better trade then on paper

The Solution - Year 1 of 3 - Dump Cap Sign D and get a top 6 RW
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Sebybbq</b></div><div>Ltir doesn’t shed the contract it’s only to help team. Go read the rule.<a href="https://www.capfriendly.com/ltir-faq">https://www.capfriendly.com/ltir-faq</a>
Team that have player on ltir can spend over the cap but still have to pay the player
And is salary the salary count
When a player is placed on LTIR, their cap hit remains on the teams cap payroll and it continues to count as it always did. It also does not provide the club with additional cap-space savings that can be banked for future use while the team operates above the salary cap. Instead, LTIR provides relief if the club's averaged club salary, or payroll, begins to exceed the upper limit. The amount of relief that the club receives is calculated on the day the player is placed on LTIR. There are three equations that are used to determine the LTIR relief, the first, the basic equation, can be used during the season and during the off-season. The second, the training-camp equation, can be used on the final day of the off-season in preparation for the first day of the season. The third formula is used when the team already has a player on LTIR.
That from the nhl cba</div></div>
You know what, I was just reading that, I was wrong on my perception of it for sure. I knew they still had to pay the player and etc but where I got mixed up was the difference of not freeing up cap space just allowing to over spend in the amount that’s tied up In LTIR and in that case then yes oilers would have to restructure that deal to dump manning, I knew most of the LTIR info just not the effect on cap floor. As far as saying your a tool was more just joking cuz you told me not to make year 2. The trades were not even crazy bad They were minor impact players except for the ghost trade and obviously I would want to win that I mean some gms are stupid lol I do take responsibility for the cap floor misunderstanding tho and now I got to learn a bit so. Works for me.

Ottawa has already hit the floor. We don't need two cap dumps.
Columbus are already extremely low on picks.. They won't trade one for brodziak..
Ghost is worth way more than that package</div></div>
You have no clue if Columbus would take brodziak, they are short of bottom six center depth and brodziak has tons of experience and had a bad year by his standards but averaged 30 plus the few seasons before. Giving up a 6th Rd for a bottom 6 good face off guys is not out of the question at all, now with that being said I understand what your saying in the same token but Columbus has tons of cap and lack of experience so you can’t say I’m wrong and your right just like in the end I can,t it’s to minor and too close
As for Ottawa and the floor see my other comment about the LTIR and cap floor
Ghost is worth way more.... I dunnno he had 39 pts last year but is bad defensively, he is on the third pairing so I can see what you mean but in the end the end goal is to still win the trade so what am I supposed to bend over on each trade lol chiarelli there have been worse trades made in real life lol

As far as I know they are at the cap floor with three players and 15.3 that will eventually designated for long term injury, I was under the understanding that those are taken off the cap as soon as season starts, do they still work towards the cap floor when designated to LTIR even though it doesn’t work towards the cap ceiling? If so then I def get what your saying and in that case a better prospect t and maybe sending a pick back would have to be involved to get manning off the books for sure but it I mean it’s not that far off but I can understand a prospect being sent back.
If that is the case what is the trade that Ottawa would make? With the same mane pieces.? Take out jurco and add a better prospect?

My tool comment was because you said “don’t make year 2” not because of your actual opinion on the trade, that I understand I can see his POV but in the md both companies contracts are 1 year and an be buried. In the end the 6 and 7th pick is not a big impact on outcome of the team so whatever it would take to trade manning for a high pick would be done. Jurco can be buried so it’s a pretty minor part of the overall plan. However looking at the depth chart manning might be a decent low risk for the sens for a year but I get why they wouldn’t either

Hahaha Tool, you know what the cap floor is right? Ottawa wants to be T the cap floor and completely retool their team, this trade is not far off base at all, even if the oilers threw in a prospect it wouldnt be a top prospect, both of these players are gone at the end of the season so its not unlikely nor would i care if it was only a 6th round coming back, those picks are far from impactful but why wouldnt i want the scales tipped in my favour a bit? In this scenario there is no salary retained, rask has had a rough two years with his injury and the trade but the fact is he is locked up for a few years and with the right team i think he goes back to being a consistent 40 pt player. Gagner is 4 years older and on an expiring contract, while he is still serviceable he is not worth more then rask or equal in a straight up trade.

once they can move their injured players on to LTIR they have space available, this trade would obviously be dependent upon them making the moves necessary to sign marner and then have the space to get benning, they could use a bit more experience in the 3rd pairing d spot but your not wrong in many ways, assume this trade is to any one of a bout ten teams that would prob make this trade or similar too was just a cap dump for oil
