Does Boston match? This would make it very difficult for them to sign McAvoy at his real market value without moving someone significant out.

Assuming Moore goes on the LTIR, this still gives them less than $5MM to sign McAvoy.

Most NHL teams would match that, Boston wouldn’t.

A Carlo offer sheet means Boston could most likely lock up McAvoy long term this year. The reason they’re both not signed yet is cause Sweeney wants to see if they can get both guys locked up with the current cap they have now and avoid trading Moore/Miller. 2 firsts next year means they’d likely trade one next deadline, assuming they’re in contention

Question for the thread maker though, are you confident the Ducks will do well enough next season where this 1st rounder won't be very high? Don't really follow the Ducks, does Carlo fill a role the Ducks really need, where he becomes worth more than a potential top 15 draft pick?

I like Carlo but he had like 10 pts last year. I have a real hard time seeing him getting that much money. Pts are what D men get paid for generally. Who was the last defense only player to get that type of money on their second deal? My assumption is that he'll get closer to 4.

I am not sure they do. McAvoy is the priority. Also, it's definitely an overpay for Carlo, at least right now. He'd have to progress and start scoring more for it to be worth it long-term. However, his defensive game is solid and that is tougher to teach. He's also big, but very mobile, which is rare.

I think we're getting criminally underrated. The Ducks aren't going to be contending for the cup, but they're not a bottom-feeder. Within our division, I think we're definitely better than LA and EDM. Obviously SJ and VG are better, but I think it's close between us and CGY, VAN, and ARI. They all have stronger D, but we win on goaltending. Naturally, I am assuming our offence will recover without RC and expecting our D to better.

I understand why people think we're terrible, but, unless you kept a close eye on ANA after RC was fired (why would you because we'd missed the playoffs anyway), things immediately improved and we were much better. With a full and healthy camp under a new coach, who most of our young players seem to like and respect, I think we're gonna surprise some people. May I am being a little bit too optimistic, but I wouldn't be surprised if we make the playoffs.

That is true. He's also being sheltered a little at this point (understandable given his age). He has to improve to become worth that deal, but the combination of size, mobility, IQ, is just so rare I think he'd be worth OSing. We NEED a OFD, but we also just need good D-men. Carlo is a good D-man. He's not good at everything, but he's not a liability and I think that is key. I could see him playing very well alongside Fowler.

Last year the Ducks were awful due in large part to the coaching and, once it became obvious that they weren't making the playoffs, the inevitable loss of interest while playing out the string. That said, the team performed better once Randy Carlyle was gone. With all of the problems (including Kase's season-ending injury), they still fell only to 24th (8th pick overall, which dropped when Chicago won one of the lotteries). Even if they don't make the playoffs this year, I think we're talking about picking 12th through 15th, and the player Anaheim would take there won't make an impact for at least two more years. I'd trade three years of Carlo for that, and still have a more experienced defenseman at the end of it. Moreover, I don't see Calgary or San Jose improving and the Ducks are clearly better than Edmonton, Vancouver and Los Angeles while equal (at the worst) to an Arizona team that added Kessel and Soderberg. Anaheim could well be in the playoffs this year, and Carlo would definitely help solve their problem at RD.
