Initial Creation Date: Sep. 15, 2019

Description
Used EvolvingWild's contract predictions for Barrie and Dermott because I'm not going to try and speculate. Barrie could be swapped for Muzzin for cheaper if Dermott can play RD. 4C, 3rd pair and backup filled with cheap free agents a la Spezza, Aberg, Shore etc. Bit of wiggle room leftover.

I’m kinda hoping we re sign neither muzzin or Barrie and find Rielly a real partner, even if it is short term. A guy like hamonic would be perfect.

I don't know why fans think they have any hold any UFA. Teams shouldn't get involved in any bidding war for UFAs. Muzzin isn't needed that badly, and I'm sure Barrie with his offensive flair will price himself out of LealLand . There has be better value out there, even if means trading a forward for cap space

That could work too, then you're looking at a trade instead. There aren't too many UFAs next summer that would be better options than Muzzin or Barrie but maybe a trade for a cheaper guy would be better. That would leave a bit extra too to resign Anderson if that was the plan in a couple years.

I know you’re itching to get rid of a forward, I see you have turned your sights to kappy lately. If mikeyev looks good while Hyman is gone (kappy will most likely fill in for Hyman and mikheyev plays 3rd line) I hTe to say it but his job may be in jeopardy. But that’s a lot of speculation. I think if a forward is moved it is for trade value more than space. Our top 5 of the future is already under contract with the leafs. How much do we want to give up to only make a log jam.

It's not dire that either of them be resigned but once Dermott is resigned there's still 4 spots that need to be filled. I'm optimistic Sandin and Liljegren can help fill those spots but if not that's a lot to fill with just trades and cheap players. Sure if they go to UFA and there's a bidding war I dont think the team would want to be in on that but if one of them liked the city and wanted to stay it's a lot easier to acquire someone that way rather than depleting resources elsewhere.

Not that I want to get rid of Kappy, but if some cheaper Marlies are deemed ready in 2020, it's an option. Even if the cap goes up to just 83.5m, the Leafs could keep their forwards, sign Dermot and have about 7 or 8m to fill the final three Dmen positions. So really Leafs might be OK and better than some other teams cap wise. Reily, Dermot, Sandin, Liljegren and three others at 8m. At that's 23 man roster.

I've been reading by the misinformed how the Marner contract have cursed the Leaf cap forever.shakes head

That's really why I played around with this. Add whatever defenseman you want whether it's a free agent or via trade, graduate Marlies to replace your bottom 6 wingers as they price themselves off the roster, the point is even if the Marner deal is a bit rich the team is still set up well cap wise for the future

It’s a lot of money for sure but what the leafs do have is cost certainty for the next 2 years on all of their stars and supporting cast minus Dermott of course. This will make planning quite easy. If I know dubas and Pridham they are already projecting next season with an 81.5m cap and will be paying close attention to both the leafs and marlies to figure out exactly what roles will need to be filled. All that and walking the line on cap all season. Pridham will add a few grey hairs this season if it doesn’t All fall out....

Hey I think the Leafs overpaid their three RFAs for. a total of 3m, but it hardly so destructive as some think. What we may be seeing (right or wrong) that top level RFAs are getting the same $$$ as UFAs.
I've looked at other teams and when their top RFAs are signed this year or next, their top 4 players will be paid 35m and a couple of those players are past their prime. Leafs top four cap 40.4m, certainly it wouldn't be as top heavy as it appears this season. Leafs just might be ahead of he curve by paying two of their RFAs, UFA money.

I will be in the minority but I think Ceci is going to do well and might have found a home with the Leafs. Look what happened to Gardiner signing for 4m. Maybe the Leafs should avoid the July 1st madness, wait for when teams have no cap and pick up a UFA cheaply when no other teams have cap in September.

I believe / hope they will re-sign Muzzin, he costed 1st and 2 x 2nds and is curently the only approximation of defensive D, Barrie is the one who isnt needed ( especially not at price of 5M+), TML have forwards to play the Offensive game. Thing is the big names that could supposedly hit FA will proly all be re-signed ( Spurgeon check ), so TML will need to operate with what they already have in the flock.

From some other thread ( where ChiHawk wanted to be smart how we need to sell Nylander again ):

To avoid the No.500 sim today where Marner is signed, i will just write it here, youll figure it

Thing is first cut will be made this year already. With Matthews and Marner overpaid by 2M each ( or 2y in term), sadly Hyman is on the way out, cause 2019/2020 already isnt doable without that

And now the sim 2020/2021, will write $$ youll figure it out i guess :

775,000 - 11,000,000 - 10,893,000...................................22,668,000
775,000 - 11,634,000 - 6,962,000.....................................19.371,000
3,400.000 - 3,500,000 - 3,300,000....................................10,200,000
775,000 - 775,000 - 775,000..............................................2,325,000
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------54,564,000

5,000,000 - 5,000,000..........................................................10,000,000
5,000,000 - 3,000,000.............................................................8,000,000
894,000 - 863,000................................................................... 1,757,000
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------19,757,000

5,000,000
800,000
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------5,800,000

scratches for 22 roster

700,000
700,000
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------1,400,000

TOTAL : 81,521,000

O is set longterm ( kinda ), proly D needs explanation, 1st Pair Rielly - UFA ( hopefully Hamonic or something ), 2nd Pair Muzzin ( 4 x 5M ) and Dermott ( 3 x 3M )

I believe its enlightfull enough, 2M in the pot still, which even makes Spurgeon or Pietrangelo at 7M fishable if any of those will hit Free Agency.....

Is it Stanley Cup team ? I doubt with above mentioned 4M missing to land another #1-2 Dman

I guess you will come with Andersen for 2021/2022 and Rielly 2022/2023 next........

I don’t mind the idea of muzzin Dermott on the 2nd pair. Hamonic would be nice, perfect partner for Reilly.

Just did an agm with Hyman in the move. I like the sims you put together but there are too many variables from one season to the next.

Let him....he was brought in as a rental for Rosen + 6th and what was left from overpaying in Kadri - Kerfoot swap.....( cause Sakic didnt want to go for 8M i guess )

Thing is they wanted Kadri out and thats what came in the package. He can be RW on some other Team that isnt pining for the fjords....i mean for D so much as TML do....
