A few facts to consider

1) Paul Fenton is seen as a terrible GM who lost basically every trade he ever made

2) Paul Fenton traded to acquire Fedor Gordeev less than 6 months ago, from the Toronto Maple Leafs

3) The Maple Leafs should avoid doing Paul Fenton-like trades if they wish to be successful, especially when its re-acquiring a player they clearly didn't want to begin with

They wanted him but they didnt have a contract spot to sign him. He could have walked for free so they traded him. He is good tho. Hes big, he used to be a forward so he is a great skater and can move the puck (in the ohl he went between the legs with the puck and absolutely dangled people) and can play in all situations. He was the only good big guy who the leafs drafted. He could easily develop with the marlies into a great 3rd pair guy who has all the tools (tall, physical, great skater, puck moving). His only flaw was that he was on such a bad ohl team that he would get into the OZ but there would be no one to pass it to so he didnt put up any points

I'm not saying he's hopeless but if you can't find space to sign him in the 50 contact limit then you probably don't value him too highly. I'm guessing that this was a controversial Hunter pick that Dubas never liked (or didn't love anyways) and he decided to ship him out for a future asset
