martin jones: 11 GP | .887 SV% | 3.52 GAA
aaron dell: 6 GP | .878 SV% | 3.83 GAA

the only teams with a worse team SV% than sjs (.881) are LAK and NJD (.863,.863). sjs has objectively the worst goaltending battery among playoff contenders and it isn't even close. that's how they're 4-10-1.

That defense doesn’t help the goalies to increase their SV%. They gave up ways to much Top scoring chance. Burns and karlsson are in the top 20 in giveaways and doesn’t match in takeaways. They lost the puck 43 time and only took it away 22 time.

jones and dell rank right around the 66th percentile for high danger sv%. they both face a disproportionate amount of high danger shots, but they save enough to stay above other starters (hart, andersen, bobrovsky, etc.)

the problem is that both jones and dell have been miserable at low and medium danger saves. here's some examples of low/medium danger sv%

jordan binnington: 0.940
matt murray: 0.930
martin jones: 0.914
aaron dell: 0.902

binnington and murray are number 1 and 2 in the league for high danger shots against--their defenses leave them out to dry even more often than the sharks' defense. danger weighted sv% tells us if a goalie is getting hung out. when your high danger sv% is bad, but your low danger sv% is also bad, that's a sign that it's a goaltending problem and not a defense problem.

it's not that jones and dell are getting hung out to dry, it's that they're uniformly bad in every scenario on the ice. they are a bad goaltending battery. possibly the worst in the league.

I know that but that what it create giving grade A chance after chance. One bad break and another bad goal and jones have non confidence non more. He had three good season. He wasn’t the greatest but he was saving the puck, karlsson come in and the turnovers machine started. He was the same in ottawa, but craig andersson some night was just over his head. Changing goaltender could certainly help but it won’t not solve your problem. The players must starts to olay the right way in front of him. And stop creating turnovers inside the bluebline. This is the worst because opposition came with a tons of speed and its lethal on almost any goaltender.
