C'mon people open you're collective eyes. Columbus is in salary cap trouble, Wennberg will be an RFA next year and Columbus has 65 mil committed to only 15 players for 17-18 season. That will give them about 9mil to spend on 8 roster spots if the cap goes up by 2mil. Wennberg will get a heft raise, leaving them in serious hot water.
The Foligno contract is terrible, he's a one season wonder who cashed in, and is locked in at 5.5mil over the next 5 years. Smith is coming off a 25 goal season and is younger, he may be a one-season wonder too, but he's a solid 3rd line center who makes 1/3 what Foligno does. Sbisa is underrated and still overpaid, but not nearly as bad as Foligno. Or, you know, you can keep paying Foligno 5.5 mil to score 12 goals on the 3rd line.
And for Kucherov, Tampa will be in cap trouble in 17-18, with around 25 mil to spend on 12 roster spots, including Palat, Johnson and Drouin, who should get around 12-16mil between the 3 of them. Depending on what they do with Killorn, Nesterov and Namestnikov this yer, if they want to keep Drouin, Palat and Johnson, they might be happy to get a 1st and 3rd for Kucherov, or risk losing Drouin next year. The offer sheet on Kucherov might just make Drouin a FA next year.
