You lost me when you said SV% is the best way to judge a goalie.

The West is not terrible, the Pacific isn't as strong as the central (Col, Dallas, St Louis), but overall, no division is "terrible" in today's league with so much parity.

Canes have one of the strongest defenses in the league. Can every team improve even in areas of strength? Of course but this is hardly a weak spot and all the stats support this. Reimer has not been horrible, very middle of the road based on SV % which is the best way to evaluate a goalie. At .917 it is indeed respectable. Mrazek on the other hand at .906 is a middle of the road backup. The point is, name a recent team that won a cup that didn't have outstanding goaltending. Maybe reimer gets hot in the playoffs and can take you there? If Lehner was available, top 6 in the league and seeing an average of 38 shots a game, he would be the difference between Carolina going the distance and not. Not saying Lehner is the guy but somebody like that of that ability. I don't think anyone would argue Lehner is a big upgrade to Reimer.

To the original point, can you take an area of strength (defense) and make it better? Of course, but I believe Carolina already has a good enough defense to win a cup. I think they can add some forward gritty type of player depth and a top 10 goaltender and be a cup favorite before adding more defense.

It's the ultimate stat; how many shots on net against and how many go in. It's the #1 stat to judge a goalie. From there you can break it down to high danger chances etc, but that is indeed the number one stat to start with.

Tonight, another fine example of why you guys need a goalie...that goal by Atkinson especially should have been handled by Mrazek. Mrazek with an astounding .833 SV% tonight. Yes, you could upgrade TVR but at the end of the night, goaltending let the Canes down. Seen this movie before...

Werenski's was on Mrazek. CAR technically won a challenge on a goal because offsides happened entering the zone...so while that doesn't affect the actual stats...that was a goal on Mrazek. Gardiner came and saved Mrazek on another...again not reflected in the stats. Foligno's was NOT on Petr. Fluke stick by Staal that feed a well positioned Foligno. The D was the problem on the Game winner. With that said, we talk about the differences between stats and eye test. There are games like Tampa (1/5/2020) where I can say despite letting up 3 goals...it was the Hamilton/Slavin pair that had a terrible night. That's an eye test win for Mrazek. He couldn't do anything about those 3 goals. Sometimes your best pair has an off night, but there are games like last night where he has an eye test loss. Where multiple technicalities is the reason it wasn't 5-2.
