Fixing the Broken Team in the Offseason

Created by: yikes
Team: 2020-21 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 5, 2020
Published: Feb. 5, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Minimal Cap Increase

We aren’t a cup contender or anything but we hire Gallant, a change of culture. And make one major move at draft day. We then put together a roster that is retooling but with a culture change and guys fighting for jobs there is a huge change. Showing the buyout of jones and trade of burns should waken the team and show them this isn’t a free ride. We then have a roster with youth competing for jobs as mentioned as we all know young players can affect a team in a big way.

We pair Ferraro and Merkley; the future of the team together. And the forward core will basically be a competitive tryout all preseason/ camp.

The only issue here is with Jones being bought out and salary retention on Burns, the team finds itself spending nearly 4 Mil for two guys not even playing for them anymore which would be rough. Not sure if DW would do this as it would just look very inefficient on his part to the owner. That being said, one of Jones being bought out or Burns being dealt could definitely happen

Burns' contract will not be retained if he's traded. Jones won't get bought out since his payment would be on the books for like 8 years

I really think if anything the sharks work diligently with Jones in the offseason in hopes of bringing him back to the competent goalie he was 2 years ago buyout and 8 years of him on the books blows! If he doesn’t improve in 2020/2021 he probably gets sent to the minors and his salary gets buried until he has 2 years left... then he gets traded to a low level team needing to get to salary cap floor along with a 1st for the trouble.
