Extend Kovy

Created by: Chuckforit
Team: 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 5, 2020

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
***Based on current team playoffs hopes (February 6th)***

Let's be honest, Bergevin won't get enough in return for Kovalchuk in a trade (compared to what Kovy might do if he stays with MTL next year)
The playoff odds and the odds of Molson firing his staff are at almost 0. The most sensible thing MTL can do is hope that everybody stays healthy next year.
I am probably the first one who would be thrilled to finaly hearing the head office declare a ''real'' rebuild, but that won't happen either.

=========================

Notable moves :

Signing Erik Gustafsson, who is definitely not staying in Chicago, is a must-do in order to solidify the left-handed defensive pairing. Might play with either Weber or Petry, depending on chemistry.
Other UFAs : Jake Muzzin might not stay in Toronto, but he is older and will ask for more money. Torey Krug will probably re-sign in Boston, and even if he was not going to, he's not going to sign with MTL

Obviously re-signing Cousins and Thompson for experience and reliability for bottom six. Re-signing Mete might be the move I would have doubts about (29 pts in 164 games, keeps making mistake in defensive Zone), but he is still young.

Drafting Alexander Holtz (currently estimated to go between 8th and 15th overall...) to improve current winger prospect pool. Cole Caufield looks promising but nothing else really ''pops up'' at the moment. We have scouting director Trevor ''small guy'' Timmins to thank for that.

===========================

RFA not re-signed :

Riley Barber
Laurent Dauphin
Charles Hudon
Noah Juulsen (probably will never play hockey again because of concussion)
Michale McNiven
Gustav Olofsson
Xavier Ouellet
Andrew Sturtz
Lukas Vejdemo (probably a draft bust, not playing like a future NHL player)
Antoine Waked

UFA not re-signed :

Alex Belzile
Christian Folin (Not reliable enough)
Keith Kinkaid (Had his chance to take the backup spot, didn't capitalize on it)
Matthew Peca (played so few NHL games in the last few years, not a big loss)
Marco Scandella (Erik Gustafsson signing = no spot for him. Otto Leskinen can be the 7th defensemen with Josh Brook in case of injuries)
Philip Varone
Dale Weise (The Dutch Gretzky is too old/not fast enough at this point)

===========================

If you've read this far, you either don't have much to do and/or are way too passionate about MTL - which is not necessarily a bad thing...

Forgot to mention that KK and Poehling start the year in Laval - need to improve their game. Might get called up in case of injuries.

Holy smokes, watch 2 entire Chicago games and you wouldn’t want to trade Kulak for him. He is so bad defensively, not worse than Erik Karlsson but close

What's sad is my biggest objection is really Vedejmo who since coming to NA has lead Laval with Evans almost by themselves as always injured MTL depleted their rosters.

Joel Bouchard talks about Vedejmo in the same way Claude Julien does about Lehkonen since his very first public address after his 1st practice and never stopping .

i mean obviously not bringing back Weise makes no sense .
Young guys love him , Domi called him his '' all time favorite teammate '' recently during Weise's 500th NHL game .
signing him for 1-1.2 million with a 500k AHL salary gives us a Babysitter in Laval we can trust and a mentor the kids Respect .

He's better than Scandella, Mete or Folin both defensively and ofensively. He's -4 , so relatively decent compared to others (Chicago D men average is at +0.4 / league D men average is at + 0.7)

Those line combinations aren't poured in concrete, injuries and/or line chemistry would definetly force Julien to mix it up.

I watched the last ten or so Laval games entirely. Vejdemo just doesn't seem fit for the big leagues. Bouchard might think otherwise but at 23 years old and with an already stacked center prospect pool, I don't think he's worth keeping around.

1 million for a babysitter who wouldn't play if injuries are low? No thank you. Keep in mind that Kovy, Weber and Gallagher already proved themselves to be the real leaders of this team. You want a good locker room guy who can produce and not slow the rest of the team on the ice.

1. a single season of success followed by nothing is just that. (CHI loaded up on LD in the off seasons knowing he'd go back to regular production)

2. Vedejmo is 1/41 contracted players in a log jam for minutes in Laval . if we had an ECHL team half the roster would be sent down . Either way you dont move him out you mutually terminate sending him back to Europe to develop like WPG did with Vasalainen before bring him back to play in the AHL this year a more complete player .

3. What part of ''babysitter in Laval '' escapes you?
or are you seriously suggesting Kovy,Weber and Gallagher get sent down to mentor the youth ?

Weise has produced on pace with Weal and had an impact .
old or not he's been chosen over perceived better players since his call up .
MTL has started winning to since he has come up as before him we were the joke with two 8 game losing streaks before December was over
Sometimes a spark plug is needed .

Hey ! Watch 2 games, stop looking at the stats, go on onhockey.tv and watch a CHI game and your eyes will bleed, he's soo bad, I couldn't believe after what I saw CHI fans are asking for a 2nd rd pick. He could fetch that after is 60 points season, not anymore

1. Chicago sport media don't seem to share that opinion, at least what I can find on Gustafsson for this season. Chicago loading up on LD is exactly why he won't resign there.

2. His contract termination possibility and AHL/ECHL balance is not a short term concern. The window for a cup is closing and Vejdemo is not going to be an important piece for the next few years.

3. Babysitter in Laval for a 1 million cap hit, yeah I got that part. Weal and other bottom 6 guys come and go. It just happens to be Weise becoming a UFA this summer.

The spark plug you're talking about is Kovy and the awakening of Petry / Charriot. They aren't perfect, but they really started to contribute offensively. Credit to Julien and the training staff to actually implement a new style of offense-first hockey.

Who would you sign to reinforce the LD then?
