Why in the world would Anaheim pull the trigger on that trade?

By adding Chara you basically consent to losing Lindholm or Vatanen in expansion because you have to protect the NMC contracts. Plus, why the hell would we want Chara? Find a better solution for adding Spooner.

Also, I like Elias Lindholm, but I would refrain from trading Despres until he's played like half the season. Other teams will be wary because of his concussions, and if he has returned to form he could be worth much more. Better for everyone to wait.

Not sure why Carolina would trade Lindholm. I think he could be a good fit as far as what we're looking for as he is young and signed for a reasonable deal the next 2 years. Not a big fan of the Boston deal. I think we could leave the D alone after moving Despres and just add one of Tanguay or Hudler to fill in on the left side.

Chara - He would have to waive his NMC to come to Anaheim so I don't think it would be valid during the expansion (similar to how Lubo waived his, but was traded to NYI). If it would, yeah the trade probably doesn't work. Ducks have young, puck moving defensemen, but need a big body and Stoner isn't reliable. Manson is physical, but not in the same punishing way as Chara. Chara brings a big, physical presence as well as veteran leadership that the Ducks will need in the playoffs. Plus, if Bruins retain salary, you are getting a good player for decent salary (his salary goes down another $2M in the final year of his contract.)

Despres - Don't think Despres would be worth more than Elias. I doubt the Canes make that trade, but maybe they are trying to rebuild and picks look more valuable to them. If you are worried that Despres will have more value, don't think it will be more than E. Lindholm even at any point in the season.

Tanguay/Hudler - Ducks already had their cheap, veteran (Raymond). They weren't good enough last year and we will need at least 1 (preferable 2) young wingers to take the next step. Adding another stop-gap veteran forward won't help this group.
