If Season Cancels

Description
IF the season is to be cancelled today. The biggest question is what happens with the Draft. for simplicity sake I will assume they just use the old format of Last place gets first and so on. They avoid a lottery altogether as the reason the lottery was put in place was to avoid tanking and since none of the teams were purposefully losing this is the safest and fairest way to manage the draft in my opinion.

With that being said time for more fun using tankathon as well as the NHLs most recent Top 31 prospects to see what the 20-21 sens could look like.

2nd Overall: Tim Stutzle
3rd Overall: Quinton Byfield
21st Overall: Justin Barron

Ottawa pulls two deals over the summer but otherwise stays the course with the rebuild as we have plenty of good young talent on the way. Arizona deal helps us get to the cap floor while giving them some cap relief. The Edmonton deal gives JP a fresh start but i do feel he still has better value than Tierney thus the later 2nd round pick. With JPs past however Ottawa gives him a 1 year prove yourself deal while keeping his Rights at years end he either shows up and becomes similar to the new Duclair as reclamation project or potentially a 2021 TDL trade piece. Numbers are again just to simply help get us to the cap floor.

Belleville Line-Up

Formenton - Brown - Batherson
Abramov - Pinto - Balcers
Gruden - Chlapik - Beaudoin
Carcone - Kelly - Davidson

Bernard-Docker - Thompson
Alsing - Barron
Lajoie Tychonick

Daccord
Gustavsson

The top line for Belleville is very much interchangeable with Stutzle, Byfield and Norris depending on how training camp goes and simply how our 2 new draft picks acclimate themselves to the NHL. The biggest challenge Ottawa will have is the fact that they have all of this great young talent but still have to find a way to hit the cap floor. Leaving multiple quality young players in a limbo between the AHL and NHL until the likes of Tkachuk, Brown, Batherson start to come out of their ELC and can start eating up some of that cap space although with someone like Brown if he doesn't have an amazing camp and push Norris with the draft of Byfield he has similar size and could be an easy alternative making Brown expendable at some point.

Looking at the long picture for Ottawa it's clear to see that come the 2021-22 Season and going forward if they keep being patient and allow everyone to develop and DJ smith can continue to get the most out of his players this could be quite a strong team for quite a few years. There are still a ton of what ifs and some of these players could fall of or be a bust but the future looks bright.

What exactly is the reasoning to not use a lottery with the current standings...….?

Im inclined to agree the question becomes how does Ottawa make the cap floor (whatever it is) and what does the NHL do with the rest of this season/draft which we dont know.

With the possibility of 10+ games per team being cancelled this would result in some GMs/Owners likely complaining about the fact that they could have better or worse odds had the remaining games been played ON TOP of the fact that there are some teams who could move into a playoff spot or fall out resulting in them having or not having a chance to compete for said lottery.

I would hardly call it "Hopeful" we are basically guaranteed two top 6 picks possibly even 2 in the top 3. It's simply being realistic about what COULD happen. We simply dont know until the NHL says this is their plan. If things get worse they could 100% cancel the rest of the season and playoffs especially if we start seeing players contracting the Virus like the NBA is starting to see. I would hardly call this scenario "hopeful" but one of likely only 2-4 possibilities if we are being realistic.

The season is being cancelled per a few inside sources of mine, but you didn't hear that here. Regardless you don't think the other teams would complain if they take away the lottery and just give it to the worst team? That makes no sense to me tbh.

Now that it's official and its only suspended at this time it's safe to say everything once it gets back to business will be status quo. However a fair discussion would be the removal of the lottery and how people would complain. In the end everyone would complain. Because lets say they keep the lottery and we take any bubble team right now. They are in the playoffs today so not eligible for lottery but what if they fell out of the playoffs in those last 9-11 games then they would be eligible for the draft lottery. so If we keep the lottery Bubble teams will find it unfair because of the what ifs, so do you increase the size of the lottery to include said bubble teams? or do you just say screw it and have all 31 teams in the lottery? but then now you have 15 Teams mad because 16 Teams who were eligible now are. So thats where the thought process of simply old school format is the simplest and "fairest" and i put that in quotation because realistically no option will ever be fair to any set of teams.

BUT since the current statement is simply postponed meaning they will resume it's safe to say it's status quo and none of this matters.

It's a fair point the more I think about it but personally the easiest solution for me is to just pick the lottery in the order it currently is with the bottom half as it normally would.
