stop-gap for 2020-21 and prep for 2021-22

Created by: juuice
Team: 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 27, 2020
Published: Apr. 27, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
A "potentially" competitive team for 2020-21 with three players on expiring contracts.

Kovy, Raanta, and Goligoski could all be moved at the trade deadline if the team is not playoff bound.

Those three positions (RW, LD, #2Goalie), could all be filled in 2021-22
- Kovy....replaced by Caufield
- Goligoski...replaced by Romanov
- Raanta...replaced by Primeau
(all entry level deals.....)
----- Allows money to resign - Tatar, Gally, Danault, KK, Petry etc. etc.

Domi on a Bridge Deal....not sure if he'll accept a bridge. I am not opposed to a longterm deal possibly.

KK, Peohling, Romanov all start in AHL.

My biggest concern is if Arizona is willing to part with Raanta or what they would want for an expiring contract.

Also depth....one or two injuries, and we might be in trouble unless KK, Poehling, & Ylonen do great in the AHL.

Trades
MTL
  1. Goligoski, Alex
  2. Raanta, Antti
Additional Details:
Both are in the final year of their deals
- Goligoski is 34 and isn't part of the rebuild
- Raanta is backing up Kuemper.....would they let him go for the year?

- Lehkonen can help their 3rd line
- Lindgren (or McNiven) are potential future back ups

--- I have no idea what they would be ask to let they go
--- and Goligoski has a modified NMC

--- MTL has the cap space in 2020-21...but not in '21-'22
--- MTL does NOT re-sign either in '21 (hence why I don't want to give up any VITAL pieces....)
ARI
  1. Hillis, Cameron [Reserve List]
  2. Lehkonen, Artturi
  3. Lindgren, Charlie
  4. 2020 2nd round pick (STL)
  5. 2020 4th round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
- Ask if they have a prospect in mind NOT named (Caufield, Romanov, Harris, Struble, Primeau)
--- - Hillis is a decent Center prospect

- Lehkonen improves their 3rd line

- Lindgren (or sub in McNiven or Demchenko) have potential to be good backups
- Draft Picks to help with rebuild

---- honestly, not sure if I need to throw in a GREAT prospect
---- I'm hoping that ARI is just looking to give up expiring contracts....

I'd gladly do that ARZ trade, Raanta usually goes for a bit more than a second, which I wouldn't be super excited about .. and Goli just isn't a good defenseman anymore, I'd trade him for a bag of pucks

You also don't need to send over a backup, ARZ still has Hill and Prosvetsov

32pts, +8, 20+min? I don't watch a lot of Coyotes hockey, but those numbers don't seem to bad. Definitely don't want him long term, but like I said....a stop-gap till Romanov is ready.

I definitely thought getting Raanta would be harder than just a 2nd Rd pick. He's done well last year, and having Raanta and Kuemper as a tandem is pretty solid.

Idk how he had a +... He was a complete train wreck outside the offensive zone

Romanov isn’t playing in Laval...Bergevin likely promised him a spot on the Habs in order to convince him to sign. If his play is terrible then maybe but he starts in Mtl.

that worries me.....I use to be more on the side of "get them into the league early if you THINK they're ready, and they can learn from the veterans"....but with MTLs lack of success in A-Prospect development in recent years, I am slipping into Gord Miller's wheelhouse of "over-ripe rather than under-ripe" .... "no one has ever looked back at a players career and said 'he spent too much time in the AHL or Junior' ".

That being said....if he makes the team and does great with the big club, FANTASTIC. .... but let's manage expectations.

Honestly I think he will be fine, I have faith that he won’t be thrown into the fire and be expected to play 25 minutes a night. He will get eased in and earn his time on the ice. Truthfully it might be a smart move for the habs to sign Marchenko and let him play with someone he’s comfortable with.
