Is this the lineup for next season
I'd swap Monahan and Dach, and then Barron and Savard....and prolly the line up. Not opposed to having Dach at Centre, but he did great with CC and Suzuki last year. Plus I think the Habs are still a proper 1C or 2C away from properly completing, even with Dach.
I think they'll surprise people in 2023-24 and be better than expected. Likely mid range and no playoffs, but lets see some growth this year, and then make some big moves for next year and start pushing hard from 2024 onward.

Ya, I think thats definitely an overpayment for an RFA, especially if he's "bratty" like you say. Not that I think Kidney is gonna be a superstar, but your giving up a top 6 in Anderson, a 1st, and basically two seconds.
An 8.5m offer sheet will be two 1sts, a 2nd, and 3rd. No trade for PLD as an RFA should be equal to that.

The Horvat comparable is relatively fair. He did hit 31 goals twice and PLD hasn’t “yet”.
Horvat got 8.5, so PLD definitely could get that, and IF the cap goes up, which is no guarantee, certainly more realistic.
In either event, the Habs could still fit him at $8.5m, and as for the other comment about PLD as a true 1C, I hope so, but I usually hear that a proper 1C should be a PPG producer
Nonetheless, I’d be pretty happy with PLD for $8.5m and Suzuki at $7.8 for the next 7-8 yrs.
Plus Bedard at $900k for the next 3yrs….

I'm not sure its a low-ball. He's maxed out at 61pts so far....0.7pts per game over his 6 seasons so far. 20-30 goal range, 25-35 assist range. Check some comparables and let me know.
It certainly could go higher, but I'm not sure he'll be in the $8.5 to $9m range on a long term deal. I'd be reluctant to pay that much.
Additionally, if it comes to being concerned that they'll, the Habs could go the trade route cause the Jets know he doesn't want to stay.

Nah...don't go trading Dach, he has been playing great on the wing too. Lots of good centres coming up this draft in the top 10, but likely won't be difference makers for a couple years, and they'll be on Entry Level deals until Dach's contract is up. Then work out the Cap Situation...
No one is going to complain about too many Centres (Suz-Dach-PLD-Bedard???). St. Louis will find a way to make it work ;) Hughes will just have to find out how to make the money work by 2026.
If they do go the trade route, a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, plus a B prospect should be enough (or maybe even FLA's pick this year). What prospect to give up? prolly depends on who they draft this year.
PLD has the leverage for another year, as WPG will lose him for nothing as a UFA if they can't convince him to stay. Which at this point seems like the case.
PLD in MTL may not be as far fetched as I once thought...

How should we feel about the alignement for next year as is
well I'd adjust the line up...
Anderson - Suzuki - CC --- great line
Hoffman - Dvorak - Gally --- has potential to be a great line
Drouin - Poehling - Armia --- umm......maybe?
Lehks - Evans - Pitlick --- a great 3rd or 4th line
Edmunson - Petry --- we know they "can" be great together
Romanov - Savard --- ....lacking the offensive push
Harris - Kulak --- ....here's hoping Harris is as good as advertised.
Schueneman
Price -- is he back to the 2015 vintage?
Allen -- a quality back-up
Throw in this years 1st rd picks possibly....maybe Guhle and Norlinder, but don't count on it.
I prolly land in the BAD-NEUTRAL category (D core is really lacking)....In the event that everything "clicks", they prolly max out at a GOOD level.

Someone suggested looking to Dallas for another future Centreman. I do like the idea of any of these three prospects from Dallas, but Montreals depth of LD prospects doesn't seem to mesh with Dallas for a trade proposal.
What would Dallas be looking for from MTL to move any 1 of those C prospects?

I hope Petry gets back to loving MTL cause he was great for us, and I'd be surprised if this year is just an off-year.
Pezzetta is a great energy for the 4th line, but nothing more. And unfortunately I don't expect Belpedo or Niku to really contribute beyond an emergency call up. Probably the same with Brook unfortunately, high hopes a few years back...but just hasn't been able to make the jump yet.
As for Subban.....I'm assuming that 2 year contract comment was a joke. I wouldn't even be surprised if he retired after this year. Did anyone see him on that LOL show with Jay Buruchel? He literally showed his ass and pretended to piss in a bottle in the corner (at least I think he pretended). I guess some people will find that funny, but it seemed more cringeworthy than funny....He definitely seems more concerned about TV appearances and promotion then trying to be an ELITE NHL Defenseman.

I don't disagree that RD are tough to find...but I think a more mobile/pucking moving RD is needed. I think Romanov, Edmunson and Petry (if he wants to stay) are the Top 4. But I don't think a Romanov-Savard pairing is gonna be able to support the Forwards well enough. And putting Savard on the 3rd pair is an option, but Cap Space is gonna be difficult to find for a proper Top 4 RD.
DEFINITELY like your suggestion of Nemec or Jiricek (if the Habs pick 3rd...). Thank God that there are Centremen AND RD available at the top end of the draft when we're pretty much guaranteed a top 4 pick (Wright, Cooley, Nemec, Jiricek, ... or maybe even Slafkovsky...as the wishlist for the Habs)
and your Dvorak point....gotta agree with you again. I even think he COULD be a 2C, but prolly just not high end enough. --- I know nothing about the Dallas centremen you mentioned, but I'm curious about them now

Contracts:

Dubois is signed for two years. He’s not in the 7,8 million category, At least not yet. Hypothetically if danault & Armia go, they replace Dubois’s. Habs have $15 million in cap space next season. So it is possible. But I agree the centre’s we finally have are good and going to get better.</div></div>
Hey, A logical conversation! Don’t see too many of those here. It definitely appreciated.
I know Dubois is at $5m for this year and next, but when that bridge is up, realistic expectation afterwards? Prolly in the $7-8m range minimum unless he bombs.
The only way I think he could fit fit the future, would be if the Habs trade KK or Suzuki for him. I doubt most people would trade Suzuki, and I'm not fully sold that he's going to be better than KK in the long term....but id be silly to not consider it at least.

As much as I'd love to see Dubois in a Habs jersey.....can MTL afford to keep Dubois, Suzuki, and KK with salary cap past this season? Next year KK is an RFA and Suzuki the year after.
If Dubois is looking for $7-8m
KK might get low-balled with a bridge...
Suzuki will be looking for (and may deserve) something big and long term
Bergevin will have to dump a fair bit of salary...i.e. Anderson/Toffoli/Edmunson/Tatar
Anyone wanna post a line up for 2022-23 with Dubois, KK, and Suzuki? (even though I'd be surprised if CLB accepted Danault in a trade for Dubois)
The life lesson here...have a plan, and stick to it. Suzuki-KK-Danault-Evans/Poehling ---- that could be a GREAT spine for the Habs for the next 5-7years --- while still keeping most of the new additions of this year.

No argument here on that. I would much prefer Lehks and/or Byron than Weal. But i do like Weal on the 4th line.
The context is "overpaying" for a player. In the cap era having two 4th liners making $5.6m may mean you're sacrificing higher end players in the top half of the line up. The line up above may work for one year with Hall at $9m. But when all the UFAs are coming up next year, a lot of tough decisions will have to be made. (Lehks will likely want a bit of a pay bump, and Byron still have 2 more years)
Top in East and West 4th Lines (according to dailyfaceoff.com)
St. Louis' = Barbashev, MacEachern, Sundvist -- combined caphit of $3.75m.
Boston = Nordstrom, Lindholm, Wagner -- combined caphit of $3.1m
Ideally I think 4th liners for the Habs should be relatively reliable cheap players --- like Weal, Thompson, Cousins, and Evans (possibly) = combined caphit of all 4 players (if they were all still with the Habs) -- $4.2m
Here's hoping a player that is WORTH $9m+ is willing to sign in Montreal......that doesn't play in goal.

- Juulsen hasn't played enough this year, stick with Fluery. Juulsen will be back next year.
- I like the idea of a young 4th line....but KK won't / shouldn't play....spleen injuries take months and months. No way they should risk a severe re-aggravation
Tatar - Danault - Gally

Tatar is on a $5.3m contract, 20-30goals and 50-70pts is a ceiling projection. If he's asking $8-8.5m as you suggest, I COMPLETELY agree that there is no way the Habs can sign him at 31yrs old. Pacioretty signed a 4yr $7m contract with Vegas and he's also 31....and a perennial 30+ goalscorer.
I also feel that GMs are starting to learn their lessons on "I'm going to pay you for what you CAN do for us, not what you HAVE done".
I'm no GM, but my suggestion, would be the $6-6.5m range....for 4 years (3 if possible...), that'll take him to 34-35yrs. He could still bang out a couple of one year deals on a 35+ contract if he's still producing.
(His current contract was 4 years at $5.3)
Anything above $6.5....I agree it'll be time to move on. But I hate giving up goalscorers......

If he's gone are you reaching on Quinn, Zary or Perrault because we really need a sniper? You and I know that's a no and it comes down to the BPA. Raymond stocks dipped because he hasn't dominated as much in the pro league as others would've liked so this selection will come with concerns but skill wise he'd be the best player left on the board. The darkhorse is Holloway, I could see Bergevin getting him cause he's playing in Wisconsin with Caufield and they'd build a connection even before coming pros next year. He wouldn't be the "wow" pick but he's got good size and made a good impact on the Badgers last year, he could be a safe floor kinda guy.</div></div>
Definitely intriguing to go with a Caufield teammate.....I don't know much about him. But don't discount Quinn. Granted I haven't watch him at all....but Craig Button had him ranked even higher than Rossi or Raymond on his final rankings in March. Called him "the best goalscorer in the draft"...and at 6' & 180lbs brings some more size than the others...except for Holtz.
Agreed that at 8th, the Habs SHOULD prolly go with BPA....unless they REALLY know something about Quinn, Zary or Perrault......Lapierre might be in the mix too if they're confident about his concussion issues....or if they drop in the draft :(

how about 2021 Line Up like this.
Tatar - Suzuki - Gally
Drouin - KK - Caufield
Domi - Danault - Armia --- sub in Holtz, Perfetti, or Quinn, in one of those wing spots (Drouin, Domi, Armia).....and you've got a goalscorer on every line with a great playmaker.

Pretty sure Rossi falls outside the top 10 because he's the smallest prospect in the first round and sadly I see Holtz going early because he's just the best natural goal scorer this year (A team like New Jersey makes a ton of sense, with not much depth on the right side I'm convinced they take him at 6).
My guess is Raymond's our pick. The interesting fact about him that I love is that he's a left winger but shoots right! For a shooter player like him it gives an offensive advantage for easy, quick release one timers.</div></div>
Rossi is small....but he's THICK. 5'9" and 185lbs. Dominating the CHL this year too.
I can see the Habs getting Raymond as well because of his dropping stock...I won't complain as he was slotted in the top 5 in earlier scouting reports. My only concern is that apparently he's more of a PLAYMAKER than a finisher. I'd like to see more of a gamebreaking Goalscorer to go along w/ Caufield. .... but in the end, if he ends up as a TOP LINE Winger or Elite Playmaker, I won't be complaining.
And Sanderson...I agree the Habs shouldn't go for him. Definitely hearing he can be proper Top 4 LHD. But the Habs have SOOOO many LHD prospects right now.
- Romanov
- Harris
- Norlinder
- Struble
--- throw Mete in there too.
Biggest Needs for Habs:
1. Forward that is a Gamebreaking Scorer / Elite Skill Level
