I came up with the idea for this trade when I saw this trade proposal:

from Nighthawk.
Anyways, I thought of if the Canadiens traded Alzner @ 50% retained for Eriksson @ 50% retained, Baertschi, and something else to provide incentive for Montreal. I don’t know what the incentive would be, that would probably be easier for Canucks fans to figure out.
If Vancouver buys out Alzner right away, and Montreal buys out Eriksson next offseason, then the cap hits would be:
That way, Vancouver saves about $4.4 million in the first year, about $1 million in the second year, around the same in the third year, and it only costs them $400K in the fourth year. (As opposed to keeping Baertschi and buying out Eriksson in 2021)
Also if Montreal decides to keep Eriksson on their roster and not buy him out, then it ends up saving them $1 million in 22-23 rather than 21-22.
not a bad trade idea but montreal still needs help on defense. mete in the top 4? juulsen in the top 6? don't know if thats a good idea
This has nothing to do with this specific Armchair GM team, but ok. As long as Juulsen is healthy, he’s an NHL defenseman all day long. I don’t know if you’re just looking at his stats or what, but he’s a great defensive defenseman. It could just as easily be Kulak or Fleury in the lineup ahead of him. And it seems like a lot of people think that Mete is worse than he is. Sure, maybe a contender wouldn’t have Mete in their top 4, but Montreal isn’t a contender. We can wait the 1 or 2 years until he is overtaken by Romanov.
I don’t know too much about Rafferty or MacEwen, other than what their stats say, but Rafferty could fill a need for the habs. Juolevi is interesting, but doesn’t really fit our needs very well. @SevenLeg I think your idea makes sense, considering what taking on Mason fetched.
Edit: Although now that I look at it, MacEwen being waiver eligible isn’t ideal for Montreal, since you probably don’t want him being a consistent healthy scratch.

how doesn't this have to do with this team it's literally what you have in your team. none of kulak or fluery should be in the top 4 either.
they would be much more likely to play that role. still would be nice to get mete out of of the top 4.
Like I said before

People tend to forget the contract limits around here. If I'm doing this deal I want to either rocket my way up the draft board or get a real prospect, Rafferty is kind of interesting but MacEwen is an Armia in the making nothing more. I'd be going after a first round or Hoglander with obviously more assets than Alzner going the other way but we can't take 4 contract at once for mildly interesting prospects. Montreal has the quantity of prospect, now it's time to aim for quality.

I completely agree. I just put Rafferty & MacEwen on here because that was the best offer so far. I’m still not sure exactly what we’d do instead of them though, since Vancouver’s obviously not trading Hoglander and they’d be reluctant to give up a 1st after a year with no 1st and no 2nd. I would recommend other prospects, but I don’t know too much about anyone other than Hoglander, DiPietro, & Podkolzin.

Well if they want to shed 6.8M$ off their books and save contract spots it'll cost more than middling prospects with one year left on their ELC. Rafferty's interesting as I've mentioned but get MacEwen out and replace with Kole Lind and a 2022 2nd, I know it's on the expensive side but because they don't want to give me an A prospect I need more value coming in.
