Description
I know everyone loves to hate the Leafs but they are one of the best teams in the NHL and are truly one player away from being a cup conteder which most teams can't say.

Leafs have the third best 1, 2 punch at centre behind Edmonton and Pitt. Kerfoot is a solid 3C and Spezza is a good 4C for another season.

Can't think of a single team that has the RW depth of the Leafs and the left wing side really compliments the skilled players on their lines (Hyman, Mikheyev, Johnsson, Engvall).

The LD is probably one of the better in the league with Rielly being a definitive top pairing guy, Muzzin being a really good defensive top 4 and Dermott, Sandin, and Lehtonen all pushing for top 4 minutes.

Leafs have one of the top goalies in the league in Freddy and although he had a down year, hes been unbelievably consistent throughout his career so he'll bounce back. Leafs injuries on the blueline didn't help. Campbell is also a really solid backup, no complaints about him after having a rotating door back there since Cmac left.

So, the only real weakness is the RD and cap space. They can move Johnsson and open up enough money to sign Demelo or another guy that can step in and play the PK and top 4 minutes while adding a pick or 2, maybe a prospect from the trade. Holl playing with Muzzin (as I'm sure you've heard from Leafs fans all year) was a solid second pairing. This leaves only the right side on the 3rd pairing, which will be made up of a combination of Sandin, Lehtonen and Dermott. Pretty good 3rd pairing, right? Forgot to mention we have a pretty good RD prospect in Liljegren too.

Leafs aren't trading Marner, Nylander, or Kapanen for a RD. They already have six NHL level defensemen and could add a 7th through free agency. Don't really see any issues with this team other than maybe the 4th line but if a couple Marlies can step into a bigger role or if Robertson can play in the NHL this year it'll fix itself.

You only read what you want to read and I can't help you with that...

JT is an experienced vet (2 x WJ Gold, OLY Gold, WC Gold) and he's earned the status. Sheesh, give him some props for C-sake.
AM is but a pup yet, so let's not entitle him too soon and hand him the keys to the kingdom.

Paraphrasing McGruff:
"Dominant player" for Robertson above (check your glasses)...

I said JT was elite, when did I not give him props? Hes just clearly not as good Matthews and I bet he would even tell you that. You also belittled Robertson after you said he was dominant by saying the minors are littered with players like him and I was proving that to be untrue, arguing with you is like talking to a wall. Enjoy hockey with your team being worse than the Leafs

Leafs fans better get ready and start remembering the name Justin Brazeau because he is on his way and is going to go down as a truly great signing by Dubas.

I think its going to be 2-3 years until hes up with the big club but I'm definitely excited to see him play if he can get his game right

Brazeau is such a great story as he grew up in Northern Ontario and had limited access to the hockey training at young age that most other players have had. However, he has something called size, tremendous shooting skills, heart and competiveness and now he is working on his skating with Barb Underhill and get ready for what is comming because it is going to be dominating if he can keep developing. The kid knows how to work so think there is nothing stopping him and he led Newfoundland in goal scoring as rookie and you are right he will be on Marlies for a couple of more years but he is comming so get ready.

For sure, I'm ready for it, hope they give him a solid role on the Marlies this year then maybe let him be 'the guy, the following year before he makes the jump. Definitely a great signing by Dubas

I did not "belittle" Robertson. You are too sensitive and being a "Fan" on a "General Manager" site is clearly the real problem here.
Fan chats are three doors over, ask for Big Al!
Adios...

Thanks man for this great post. From one leaf fan to another, this is 100% one of the best posts I’ve seen. Can’t wait until these guys mature and get stronger. Watch out NHL.

@Terry_AkiSauce , don’t listen to Mcgruff. Some ppl on this site are just out to get under your skin. You’re never going to win with these guys. All the points you made were valid, (and how on earth could he say that Tavares, Matthews, Rielly, and Marner aren’t elite?!?!). All he was trying to do was knock you down. Youll never win with these people. No offence to Mcgruff. I’m sure he’s a nice guy, just it bothers me when ppl do that.
