Description
I was bored so I found a way to kill some time by wondering what might happen if Eichel absolutely will not play for Buffalo next year. I used the Lindros trade as a blue print since that is the closest comparable I can think to with regards to Eichel, and used the Habs because I'm more familiar with their players.

When E. Lindros refused to play for Quebec and they were forced to trade him the return was:
$15M cash = $15M in cap relief (since league won't allow cash trades now)
2 - 1st round picks = 2 - 1st's (duh)
M.Ricci = This one is tricky. Ricci had a great rookie year and followed it with an even better second year. This could fit Kotkaniemi except he regressed in his second year so I think Suzuki fits the bill even though he has only played 1 season.
S.Duchesne = an experienced top pairing defenseman with 1 year left on his contract, would have to be Petry on the Habs
R.Hextall = C.Price - aging goalie in the twilight of their careers
K.Huffman = Bottom pairing older Dman = B.Chiarot
P.Forsburg = #1 prospect in Philly's system at the time of the trade = Caufield or Romanov
C.Simon = R.Poehling

My guess is that Philly had no idea how good Forsburg really was or they never would have made the trade.

The trade work out for Quebec/Colorado so maybe it will work for you guys. Well I guess not so well for Quebec but hopefully your team won't have to leave Buffalo shortly after the trade. 😜
Good Luck!

In all fairness after looking at the results of the trade I think that Buffalo would probably request Lehkonen instead of Chiarot and Danault instead of Petry since it looks like Buffalo doesn't need more D-men so I made that change.

Nice!

In reality though, if Eichel demands a trade, BUF is in trouble. In a cap world you will never get full value for your stars, Eichel is phenomenal but his value to BUF is greater than they would receive in any trade.

I'm guessing the Sabres are nice enough to allow you to keep all of Price. Not sure how taking on 48 mil in Price equates to Montreal retaining 15 mil. Just send them Primeau and call it even.

The Sabres can add Okposo and retain 1 mil. That would be the same as sending them 15 mil...

You’d have to change one of the 1st’s to this year but BUF would be foolish not to listen to that offer.

Actually the trade happened at the 92 draft and Quebec sent a 1st from 93 and 94 so I was just trying to copy the original trade as much as possible.

Again I was using the Lindros trade as my blueprint. Philly didn't send a goalie prospect in their trade to Quebec they sent an older goalie.
I guess you could change the trade to benefit the Sabers if you think that's fair. But at the time the trade was made people were comparing Lindros to Gretzky, I don't hear too many people comparing Eichel to McDavid. So I don't see why anyone would give more for Eichel than Lindros.
I get your point about wanting the $15M in a different format I guess sending Okposo and retaining $1M works. I was just trying to match the pieces that were moved in the Lindros trade.

BTW this is not a serious trade offer I just wanted to see what it would look like. Personally I don't think the Habs should do the trade either.

Now that I think about the trade I realize that you are correct about dumping a 7 year $10.5M contract on Buffalo Hextall only had 1 year remaining on his contract. The problem is I don't think Montreal has anyone who would compare to Hextall. It would have to be an older player who use to be a star but is now past their prime but has 1 year of term left on their contract. The closest thing we have to that would be Gallagher but I think he has at least 2 years of hockey left before he would be considered past his prime and be at Hextall's stage when he was included in the Lindros trade. I don't think the Habs have the right pieces to copy the Lindros trade exactly. If we sent Gally, Buffalo would have to send a 2nd round at least back to compensate I think.
