Quoting: Pens3lieve
We’re not just talking a Murray for Necas straight up deal. The pens would add a forward at least. A Murray deal wont be a 1 for 1 swap.
Coaches and GMs say a lot of things. The coach compliments Jack Johnson, the human pylon. Our GM says players are great one day and trades then the next.
I absolutely recognize fleury’s huge contributions to win those 2 cups. Defense and goaltending wins championships. Murray/Fleury(both performing at their best) was the best and most successful goalie tandem in recent memory. Mrasek/Reimer(in whatever order you put them) are not a Stanley cup caliber tandem. Their goaltending is not top-10 or close. You recognize how huge it was to have Murray/Fleury but you claim your goaltending isn’t a weakness...Reimer(your supposed starter) was a bust in Toronto. Mrasek is nice but you yourself said he’s not a starter.
A necas + for Murray + forward + deal makes a tons of sense.
Period.
If Necas is the price, Carolina will stick with the goalie that got them to the Eastern Conference finals. Remember, Antti Niemi and Cam Ward have both won the cup as starters. You don't need elite goaltending, just a hot goalie. Look at Binnington. He's good, sure. But a .912? That's worse than Reimer, yet he's supposedly a cup winning calibre goalie. After all, he did win the cup last year! Reimer wasn't a "bust" in Toronto. He actually played very well. Everyone slates him for his performance in that infamous game 7, but if it wasn't for Reimer, that series doesn't go 7. Boston likely advance in 5. Reimer was bad in Florida, fair enough. But given the recent discovery of taking former Vezina winning goalies and turning them into goalies that look like the Jack Johnson equivalent of a goalie, I'd give him a pass for that. Before he came to Carolina, he only spent half a year on a contender, and that was San Jose, where he preformed very well. He's shown he's got the ability to be a goalie who can anchor a deep playoff push, he's just never had the team around him to do it. As for Mrazek, he's not a starter. He's too inconsistent. When he's hot, he's capable of putting Vezina numbers up, I invite you to look at Carolina's game in Colorado last year if you wish to argue this. He's got the ability to just take over a game. However, he's also got the uncanny ability to let every 1st shot of the game go in. He's a very good backup, and he's got lots of experience of going deep into the playoffs from his time with all three of Philadelphia, Carolina and Detroit. Both have the ability to back-stop Carolina to a cup, and when you put them behind, let's not beat around the bush, the best D core in hockey? It makes the job that much easier. Carolina have a need for scoring. They finished league average in goal scoring, despite being among the best defensively. Necas for ANY goalie is just a no. Unless that goalie in named John Gibson, Carolina are gonna hang up upon mention of Necas. His name literally translates from Czech as "Bad weather" and if you swap the letters around a little, you can turn Necas's name into Canes, not that this matters, I just thought it was cool. Carolina aren't giving up from their MAJOR need to fix something that works, but isn't ideal.
