Quoting: ChiHawk
Take a look at what Toffoli just pulled in as a playoff rental and 18 months older then Saad and I don't think many people would argue Saad is a superior player.
Toffoli as a pending UFA with $4.6m caphit returned:
Tim Schaller · $1,900,000
Tyler Madden · $0 (AHL/JR) (Signing Rights)
2020 2nd round pick (VAN - #43)
2022 conditional 4th round pick* (VAN)
*Conditions: Pick is transferred if Tyler Toffoli re-signs with the Vancouver Canucks
That's:
- a 4th liner pending UFA / $1.9m salary dump
- a 2018 3rd round pick who had a good D+1 and D+2 seasons
- 2nd
- conditional 4th in 2022 if he resigns
That would essentially be something like:
Saad for:
- Nieto ($1.975m 4th line pending UFA)
- Beaucage
- 2nd
- 2022 conditional 4th
Keep in mind that Toffoli had $1.4m AAV less than Saad. The trade was also considered to be a very high price by Vancouver at the time of the trade.
Granted the prospect might need to be some slightly better than Beaucage (compared to Madden), but looking at the Toffoli trade and the comparable here I don't think a Jost + 3rd trade is that bad an offer. Keep in mind that Colorado wouldn't really need to send any salary back which is also valuable.
