Holy cow, a Severson trade that includes a first rounder and not junk parts. The Devils D would be historically bad without Severson but they have to think about this package and maybe take it.

swap Dermott, SDA, Duszak out for Kapanen and a late round pick in 2020 and I would accept that

ehhh. Dermott is a 6th / 7th defenceman, SDA had okay numbers for a 2000, Duszak is likely a career AHLer, and we have to wait a year on the pick. It's not horrendous but I wouldn't be overly thrilled with it either

The goal was to do it without moving Kap, which is why SDA and Duszak. I’ve actually seen Duszak play a good amount this past year with the Growlers, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see him make it to the show. Might take a while and not in a huge role, but he’s got the tools. I think so anyway. SDA’s rep is pretty well known and Dermott is a definite NHL player, plus the first. Thought this was actually a fair trade.

I think you’re undervaluing each one, but we’re all entitled to our opinions. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Which is why they have to think about it. Consult the staff and find out how deep that draft class projects. It's not a slam dunk but I have been fighting with Leafs fans who want to give us nothing for what they see as a crappy D player but want desperately and think I should be thrilled with a 3rd rounder for too long. Sevo's experiment at LD was a disaster and messed with his stats but he is a very good D man.

Severson isn't the type of D man the Leafs want/need. He's like a worse version of Tyson Barrie.

Look at how much you're being asked to retain, it's not that great of an offer.

We are last in the league in cap hit with little needed for reinvestment for the next few years. Last concern.

That may be but for 50% retention the Devils could do better, teams don't retain that much when trading good value contracts with three years left of term, really can't remember the last time it's happened.
