Tough cap situation

Team: 2020-21 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 7, 2020
Published: Jul. 7, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Barzal - Since the Cap is going to remain Flat - I believe Barzal will go the Laine or Point route signing either a 2 year or 3 year deal, which will bring the cap hit somewhere between 6 to 7. Barzal will still be an RFA after a 2 or 3-year deal.

Pulock - Ryan is in a different category. I believe if Ryan signs a 3-year deal that will take him to UFA status because he will be over 27 years old, so abridge deal doesn't work here. And it is not a good idea to sign Pulock or Barzal to 1-year deals because the Isles will still have Boychuk, Komarov, and Clutterbuck on the books. You also have to resign Pelech and Beauvillier. A longer deal makes sense here - Isles can go the full 8 years at 6.5 million AAV this is 1 year more the Trouba and 1.5 million less.

Devon Toews - He only has 2 years of NHL games under his belt, so anything more than 3 million AAV on a bridge deal doesn't make sense. On a bridge deal for 2 years at 2.5 AAV sounds fair, but he will become a UFA after that so it's risky. If it goes to 3 or 4 years the number rises to 3.5 - 3.75.

Sorokin - From what I can research, converted to US currency he made about 1.5mill/year. Since he will be burning his ELC, I think a 2-year RFA deal makes sense for both parties.

Lineup - for forwards, you can rotate in MDC with ross/bellows. Or swap in the BP guys. For defence, they can either keep dobson up and rotate him in with Boychuk again, or sign an old vet real cheap (maybe Greene would be interested?) and send Dobson down. Personally, I think Dobson is a better fit for BP if he is going to have limited NHL time.

Unfortunate as I really like Leddy, but he's the most moveable of the high contracts we have. If they can send Hickey as well (or flip an asset gained from leddy to send him out) that would help.

Optimistic, but somewhat reasonable. I think the biggest issue is that Toews is already 26 and his next contract will take him into unrestricted free agency. If we want to keep him long term, we'll have to pay him a little more. He's been nothing but great since his call-up, so I think we'll have to pay for that. I think he'll get somewhere around 4.250 mill for 4/5 years, right around what Rasmus Andersson got, who I think is a good comparable.

To pay for this, I think we've got to look at trading Boychuk with 50% retention and add a couple sweeteners. Someone will take him if we send enough back and I don't think it will have to be too much. That will free up a spot for Dobson and space to keep either Greene or Hickey to play with him.

Toews is a UFA after this. Would need 1 year to keep RFA status. I thought what you did was correct for a while myself but I was proven wrong. I don't know if I would risk it

Lol if a d-man goes down I'd rather call up a guy than play the pylon that is Boychuk... same goes for Staal in NYR

Zero chance of Matt Barzal signing that cheaply, He's probably an offer sheet candidate.

If it were up to me Boychuk would never play in the lineup again, Dobson is so much better, and for him to grow he needs to play in every game

I agree, it was something I was trying to convey in the team explanation. They don't really have many options so I think it's a risk that will need to be taken. The recent optimism on Salo may allow for him to be replaced, should that scenario happen. We do also have a slight advantage in that his fiance is from CT, so he may (believe it or not) want to stay in the area.

Yeah, so then it would need to be a 1 year then, unfortunately. Unless some team wants to be really nice and bail us out by taking a contract, I think it's a risk that will need to be taken.

They could look to move bailey as he is still valuable, but then you're just relying on bellows/wahlstrom/holmstrom/koivula and pushing the risk.

That was the note that I had in the explanation, I'd want Dobson to be wherever he gets the most playtime. In my mind, I don't see Trotz benching Boychuk a majority of the season, so I would rather have Dobson down in the AHL having top-line minutes

He's most definitely an offer sheet candidate, but so was laine, pointe, aho, etc. Every team is going to have cap trouble this off-season, I can't see them affording a massive payment to take Barzal.

In terms of Barzal accepting the contract, he doesn't have much of a choice. With no CBOs or cap increase, the players will be forced to take lower contracts this summer. It's not and islanders & barzal exclusive issue - every team will run into this.
