Loui gets a job

Created by: alwaysnextyear
Team: 2020-21 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 7, 2020

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I've already done several different ACGM's with various methods of getting rid of Eriksson's contract, including trades, buyouts and even an attempt at legal cap circumvention. But why don't the Canucks just offer him a job with the team instead? Loui would agree to retire/terminate the remaining two years of his playing contract, and accept a role with the club either in coaching or management (his choice) that has a very 'generous' signing bonus or salary structure for the first two years. Seems like other players have done this in the past, or am I wrong? Would the league get pissy about this?

This would be a win-win for both Eriksson and the team. He'd get paid his remaining salary in a different role, plus start getting experience for a post-playing career, while the team would free up necessary cap space without using picks or prospects to get rid of the contract. This would obviously also be the nicer strategy by the team than giving Eriksson the ultimatum to either terminate his contract or play two full seasons in Utica.

I feel like, if he's not injured, the league would be up in arms about what would definitely be considered cap circumvention.

Speaking of injury, what's the latest on Micheal Ferland? I see that you're carrying him on the roster for next season.

I believe he is all good to go for the playoffs, as his symptoms from his concussions in February have seemed to clear up. He's currently back at training camp.
Leivo on the other hand might not be back until next season, that is if he resigns.

But what if he wants to 'retire'. Not that uncommon for a guy his age, even if he's not currently on injured reserve. If both the player and the team were on board with this scenario I don't think the league could do much about it, other than maybe(?) enforce some kind of limit on his new salary. Not sure the league has that authority though.

I'm very curious to see how Ferland's situation plays out. He tried coming back twice this season and suffered setbacks almost immediately. Best case scenario would obviously be that he's fully recovered and plays an effective grinder/pest role on a line with other skilled players like he's done in the past. But I think it's just as likely he ends up on LTIR based on the length of his recovery process and setbacks so far.

I agree. I wouldn't be surprised if they announce that he won't be available for the playoffs (and possibly next season), but I'm hoping for the best and wish he can return to playing hockey in general.

I have no idea on the actual rules regarding it, but if it were the case, I'm assuming "Robidas Island" wouldn't exist, because teams like the Leafs would be trading for these guys, getting assets to take the contracts, and then giving them their own office at MLSE to hang out in
