Am I wrong about LTIR. My understanding is that if a player costs $5 mil, the team is allowed to go $5 mil over the cap ceiling but the player on LTIR counts toward their cap. That results in the same amount of cap, not including that player.

If this is true, Detroit has no reason to trade Zetterberg since we have the money to pay Zetterberg.

Zetterberg would cost the Leafs absolutely nothing on LTIR, And his real money owed is only $1 million. That's hardly a cap dump.
