Description
Really interested in Vancouver's offseason outlook. Did my best with it, but not exactly sure where they're at.

Sutter trade could be with anyone. I think he's a solid depth forward, but Vancouver can't afford to keep him. Retaining exactly $2 million allows Vancouver to get rid of him at a cheaper price than the buyout and doesn't have to pay him in 21-22. I'm not sure who would want Sutter, but Nashville seems like a team that could use some more depth, so I sent him there.

Baertschi trade was a little harder. I've seen Wings fans on here not express a lot of interesting in taking on smaller cap hits like this, but the truth is that I think Baertschi could be a decent top-9 contributor for Detroit. Tore up the AHL this season and has produced at a good rate in the NHL in the past. There's risk it doesn't work out, of course, but I think it's a reasonable risk for them to take. If he works out, they could get even more back for him at the trade deadline.

Benn gets bought out or buried, wasn't very good this year. Maybe a team like Winnipeg would take him for cheap and hope he bounces back, but the point is here that he isn't with the Canucks to start next season.

So here is what I'm curious about: Who stays and who goes among the UFAs? Supposedly Canucks management really likes Toffoli, so I imagine he sticks around. Tanev is getting older, so making a long-term investment in him is risky, even though they need RHDs. Markstrom seems like a no brainer, but Demko and they Expansion Draft, it's doubtful both of them are on the team past next season. Furthermore, I imagine Markstrom will ask for a NMC in year one of his next contract, forcing his team to protect him. He's probably the most consequential of the three so what happens with him will go a long way to picturing their future.

I'm really interested in seeing both how Canucks fans think things are going to happen, as well as what they want to have happen. Also some perspective on where Juolevi is at in his development would be insightful too.

Again, doesn't have to be Nashville (or Detroit really). Sutter is pretty solid defensively, even if he doesn't bring much offensively. I think at $2.4 million for a year on a team's 3rd line could be a pretty good addition, especially for only a late round pick. Baertschi is kinda the same way, but a little riskier considering he spent most of the season in the AHL, but the offensive upside is there and if a mid round pick is thrown in, I honestly think its worth the risk.

4th doesn't cut it though. Again Baertschi cleared waivers, if a team wanted him, they'd have him. if your 2nd ends up later in the round, that might be a reasonable price for taking him on.

Ok even if it is a different team no one is going to give Baertschi positive value and trade anything for him. He's an anchor not as big as Ericsson or Sutter but an anchor none the less.

There's roughly $9 million coming from Edler, Pearson and Demko even after replacing them with players on their ELC's, so that should be enough.

I agree with you on Sutter. Nashville have only Arvidsson, Sissons and Watson under contract for next season, with Tomasino in the wings. (New Jersey have only Palmieri and Anderson, with absolutely no one in the system who's even close to NHL-ready.) These aren't the only teams who could use a short-term depth C/RW. (For example, why did the Flyers trade for Derek Grant?)

I don't think that Vancouver has to trade Baertschi to get rid of his cap hit. They can remove part of it by doing the waivers-AHL thing again or buy him out for only $1,766,666 this season.

The issue is how many of the four free agents Benning wants to keep. I'm with you -- I think he'll opt for Toffoli, Stecher and Markstrom and save a million between the first and last, thereby assembling a full 23-man roster.

Pettersson gets Edler's $6 million on a bridge for two or three years, and Edler gets replaced by a youngster on Pettersson's ELC; Hughes gets $4 million from Pearson and what remains from his and Demko's contract (being replaced by a slightly less expensive backup); pay Toffoli and Markstrom a total of $11 million instead of $12 million.

Could work. I also think they buy Eriksson out, get about half his cap off the books. With only a year left on the Beagle and Roussel deals are a little more movable.

I don’t really think they’re in that much trouble, they’ve got a lot of options for clearing cap. Just a question of how they’ll do it
