NEW RHDs and Realistic Shake Up for next season

Created by: Stormblaze
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 11, 2020
Published: Aug. 11, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
- Weegar/Kapanen trade: FLA needs scoring, especially as Hoffman is likely to leave. They are also have Ekblad and Stralman ahead of him on the RD which caused Weegar to play LD. TOR needs a defensively strong puck-moving dman, Weegar fits the bill nicely. Manson and Pesce are popular choices among Leafs fans but their teams will probably want more than Kapanen.
- Severson trade: Really good puck moving defenseman, who is sometimes questionable in his own end. Playing alongside Muzzin will definitely help him in that regard. NJD is in need of a shake up including offensively, they need offensive talent (playing zajac, joey Anderson, and zacha in their top 9). This trade allows them to acquire a 2-way, 20 goal scoring winger in Johnsson and a player with offensive upside who has not been given the chance in Toronto in Bracco. They also get Justin Holl, allowing them to get a dman back (they aren't deep there at all). More could certainly be added to this deal to entice NJD

- Toronto should play 7D on some nights as Lehtonen is quite good an can play both sides. On other nights where everyone is healthy and 6D are being dressed: Dermott, Sandin, and Lehtonen battle it out for the spot. Defensive depth is necessary
- If Korshkov goes to Russia, Toronto can play someone like Gauthier or somebody else from FA on a min contract.

Realistic assessment of what can actually happen with the leafs. I like to look at big moves as most do on here but reality is cap situations through league make big trades tough.

I am sure Jersey fans will protest but I am all for these. It certainly won't make them worse, like many of the other moves on this site. "Let's move Nylander for a 28 year old who is at best a #4 defenceman but is right handed."

Big moves are fun, but unlike many, I think the problem with the Leafs lies in their right-handed dmen and scoring depth (especially in the playoffs). In terms of the big players: Matthews is untouchable, Tavares is untouchable and has an NMC anyway, Nylander has performed well, is on a good contract, and is probably underrated by most GMs, and Marner is at a really low trade value right now (pertaining to his quality)

Absolutely... if you want something good we will have to trade something good. For me I like Marner better but 11mil is brutal. It’s sad we finally get exciting young players and the cap goes stagnent. Ultimately a change is needed.
