Small changes address needs

Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 12, 2020
Published: Aug. 12, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Assumptions on salary and term are based on how current Leafs management tend to form contracts, as opposed to what people would like to see. Don't hate me, hate Shanny and Boy Wonder.

This plan leaves the forward group in tact and adds trust to the right side D.

Bogosian: The biggest question mark is his value depending how far Tampa goes in these playoffs and what his impact is during it. He could price himself out to a team with more room who is willing to pay more than the Leafs can afford.

Soucy: Serviceable and solid on the back end and not an expensive option.

Other options: Injuries will happen, so don't be sad about Sandin/Liljegren, they'll get their chances. Also, no one is talking about Byfuglien. Depends on his fitness and what other interest (if any) there is around the league, but he's an interesting thought if he can come within 2M.

Term is going to be way less on deals like that. I'd give Bogosian a 1 year 1 million deal though. See how he looks.

Term SHOULD be way less, I agree. But this management isn't known for giving term that's ideal.

That is total Bull****. Matthews would have cost more with more term, Marner should have gotten another 2 years I'll give you that. Nylander is a terrific contract. And literally every other contract Dubas has done has been team friendly.

I think a lot of players like Bogosian are going to head to europe. They haven’t handled the pandemic as horribly as the US and they’ll actually be able to have fans at the games and probably will be able to pay more.

Nylander's contract is great, I don't understand the Leafs fans complaining about it or about him. I'm not talking about the stars when I say management has an issue with term though. Stars will get what they want. But look at middling players like Johnsson, Kapanen, and Kerfoot. That's three guys combining for 1/8th of your cap and each locked in for 3-4 years. Not good plays. Should be less money for that term, or shorter term for that money. Now all three are tied down and at least one has to be shipped out to stay under the 81.5M for the next three years.

I'd be very concerned if Zach Bogosian was in the top pair to open the season.

Plus two players short of a full roster with no cap space. I doubt the leafs go with a 21 man roster.

Still need to move someone else out.

Can't be worse than Holl or Barrie, can it?

All fair contracts 40 point players at less than 4 million is money well spent.

Yes it could but is that really the standard you want for a top pairing D man?

Okay then solve both your problems and ship out Bogosian and his new contract.

Go find me a consistent 20 goal 40+ point player that doesn't make over 4 million.

This was actually a response to a specific quote not the general thread. Just hit the reply button instead of quote.

I think Bogosian could be way worse than Holl or Barrie.

I knew what you replying to, I was joking. Suggested that getting rid of Bogosian would be the extra player you said needed to be shed, even though that re-opens the problem of not having a top RD. I think I was tired, ignore me.

Convince me that Kerfoot, Kapanen and Johnsson are consistent 20G+, 40P+ players and we have a deal.

Both Kapanen and Johnsson were on pace for 40 points and Kerfoot is going to be around there as well. Johansson's numbers are a little skewed though, he was on a 42 point pace before he hurt his shoulder and then was only back for a few games before getting hurt again. Kerfoot also missed time and never had consistent linemates. I love how now according to people on this site, all Leaf contracts are bad. No matter what. Matthews is over paid, despite being a top 4 player in the league. Nylander is overpaid despite being less paid than a pile of players he out performs. Guys who literally everyone in the game say are on team friendly deals in Johnsson, Kerfoot and Kapanen, they are overpaid. I bet you'll say Spezza is overpaid at the league minimum.

Nah, Spezza is underpaid, the guy is a horse. None of the superstars have bad contracts either, and I agree about Matthews' ranking. The armchairians here are a little overzealous with the hate. I trolled them with another roster here: https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/350330?post_id=1634436
