It does make sense from an organisational depth perspective for LAK and NYR to swap places. NYR would fix their C depth with Kupari, Madden, and probably Byfield, whilst LAK trade from a position of strength (Center) to get a forward which they need more than another C in Byfield/Stutzle. I doubt Rangers accept this though, Lafreniere is in a tier of his own, and you just have to take him and then sort out the C issue with other moves.
