Getting around the flat cap to build a winner

Created by: Okthenbyebyenow
Team: 2020-21 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 12, 2020
Published: Aug. 15, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Oilers make a splash at the draft by first drafting future franchise goalie Yaroslav Askarov then trading Puljujarvi, Neal and a 1st in 2021 for Ottawa’s late 1st round pick via NYI and Ottawa’s late 2nd round pick via DAL. Ken Holland then makes a trade to free up cap space while getting younger, talented depth players: Larsson and Athanasiou for Sanford and Dunn. This gives the Oilers a big strong winger with huge upside and a PP QB defenceman who loves to hit. But the blockbuster move is the signing of UFA Taylor Hall. Bringing Hall back stabilizes the first 2 lines and gives McDavid a true 1st line winger that he really never got much time with under McClellan.

I would suggest it’s a downgrade for the Oilers but a necessary change. There’s a good chance that Pietrangelo signs elsewhere so that takes $6.5 off the books

Winnipeg has no need or desire to waste cap space on Russell for a year.

Ottawa trade makes no sense for them, theyll want Pulijarvi or your next year's 1st to come with Neal for future considerations or a b-c prospect at most.

Actually his faceoff and PK stats were remarkable, especially given the terrible team he was on.

That’s possible but given the upcoming expansion draft teams will be looking at D with 1 year left

The expansion draft is after next season which is after Russell's contract runs out.

Exactly. Teams are more likely to sign or trade for D with 1 year left to fill their roster so they don’t have to protect them in the expansion draft.

Okay, I thought you meant too expose himin the ED. Anyways Russell isn't worth spending assets on.
