Trade with Rangers - Read Description

Description
Hey Flames fans, should you lose to Dallas, I have heard rumblings of potentially blowing the team up. Is that accurate from what you want or hear as well? Aside from 1OA, Kakko, Zbad, and Shesty, what would you need from the Rangers to trade Monahan? I added some cost controlled pieces to start the conversation, but I’m curious to hear what you would want.

He's younger than Mika and Panarin...

The point is you trade away two pieces with the same/if not higher ceiling AND a 1st to get a guy who’s production has been on a decline. Rushing this is going to put us right back in mediocrity to ruin Shesty’s career just like we did Hank’s. We have to be patient...

Not to mention this does nothing for Calgary now. They are in win now mode. Trading Monahan leaves a huge hole on their roster that Chytil can’t quite fill yet...

We're undervaluing Monahan pretty severely here. But I agree, the Flames don't want this deal, regardless of what it looks like to us. To them it looks like a lot of lottery tickets, and one might even just be a scratcher.

This reverses half the rebuild in one, Sather-esque move...

I strongly disagree. If monahan was like 31-32, I would agree. The dude is 25 and could potentially help us contend next year. Also, look at Calgary’s forward core, it’s pretty average aside from him and Gaudreau.

I also only asked this only if they decide to blow the team up.

Maybe so, but from my perspective the Rangers are not a Monahan away from contending. The defense group still needs a lot of work (good prospects coming but can’t rush them). My point is rushing the window is a bad idea. Trading away prospects that could have a longer term impact is a bad move, especially after getting so many of them over the last few years. If in 1 to 2 years we’re one piece away from contending and their are quality prospects blocked on the depth chart by other good players, that’s when you pull the trigger. It’s too early in the process to be making this kind of move...

I can get behind this. I just want that number 2 center sooner than later. I don’t want to waste time and money with strome when he’s just simply not the answer, no matter how well he plays with Panarin. God forbid Panarin goes down, he wouldn’t be able to keep up with good teams 2C’s.

I would also look to make another move for a shutdown LHD. I think that would put us right there with contending for a solid 5+ years.

Agreed. Those things do happen in hockey. However, I still think you're too high on Chytil. I've watched pretty much every game of his and it just doesn't seem like he has the presence of mind to be as important as Monahan. Granted, I'm not diving deep into analytics or anything. It's important to remember that for every Martin St. Louis there are thousands of 1st rounders that never turned into anything. I'll be glad if he's eventually tuned his abilities enough to be as impactful as Blake Coleman.

If youve read any of my posts about Chytil, youd know Im not high on the kid and think he belongs on the wing, but with 2 years left as a RFA... hes a cost controlled 3C and we got nothing to lose really. However, by no means is he untouchable in my eyes.

Theres been plenty of hypothetical moves for Hampus Lindholm and Vince Dunn to shore up the LHD. I like the idea of Hampus + Trouba/Fox as the top pair.

ADA+ for Lindholm is a compelling move, noting our LHD deficiency and their RHD deficiency...

As a Flames fan, I would like to see Buchnevich coming back. If you subbed him in for Chytil would this still be appealing?

I don't understand why NY fans don't like Buch, seems like a really good player to me. Monahan can't really drive a line on his own. Isn't great outside of his shot. Chytil is also good, but I feel like people really underrate Buchnevich. If you'd part with both of them, we'd probably do that too haha

I think it’s because we watch buch every day. buch is soft on the puck, makes boneheaded plays all the time, and has a knack for not finishing and getting VERY frustrated with himself. With our plethora of wings and lack of centers, moving him in a package for a high end 2C is ideal.

As for monahan fitting in with the rangers, he could be on Panarin’s line. Monahan could shoot to his hearts desire with Bread’s ability to pass the puck. Then you can put either laf or kakko with them. Top line would be laf zbad kreids or Kreids zbad kakko. Second line would then be laf monahan bread or bread monahan kakko.

End result would be 2 top lines that could be very deadly.

You think that would be enough? i feel like we may have to overpay a bit for a young player thats still under contract.

Eh, I don’t think that’d be enough if I was Calgary, wouldn’t be the first time NYR got a great deal from a desperate team tho
