Staying Competitive in a Flat Cap Revisited

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Just my (2nd) take on trying to get out of the hell that is Vancouver's salary cap.

Trades:
See below

Signings:
I think Tanev unfortunately will be too expensive to bring back and will also deteriorate quicker. Hamonic is a similar player who will be cheaper and I think will be more consistent through the years. He made Hanifin look good in Calgary so I think being with Hughes will be a similar partner to Tanev. Due to the cap maneuvering, I was able to resign Toffoli for 5 years and also assumed we could resign Markstrom at $5mil per (debatable though). We probably won't be able to sign Brossoit but getting a backup at $1,250,000 shouldn't be too hard. RFA signings are pretty self explanatory.

Line Combinations
I think Vancouver could sport a very competitive lineup with these players. Looking at the forwards, the 1st line is all about offense. Miller, Petey and Boeser will light it up again. The 2nd line takes care of both ends. They can generate offence as well as look after their own end. Assuming Podkolzin is ready to make the leap, the 3rd line would be our energy line. They aren't the biggest but they are very capable of playing with grit and high tempo. They can also put up offense as well. The 4th line are smart players who are responsible and do the little things right.
Defence is similar to this year, Hughes and Hamonic (Tanev's replacement), Brodin and Stecher (similar to Dumba?), and Edler and Myers. Fantenberg can sub in wherever as well.
Special teams also gets an upgrade. Top powerplay stays the same but 2nd powerplay gets more experience. Podkolzin also excels in the net front presence. Penalty kill also gets better with additions of Rakell, Brodin, and Hamonic.

Expansion Draft Consideration:
In an ideal world, taking Myers or Hamonic would be the best. We'd get cap room and Juolevi, Rathbone, and Rafferty could make the jump to the NHL. If we lose a forward we could get MacEwen to fill in. Hoglander could also be ready to make the leap.

  1. Brodin, Jonas ($2,083,333 retained)
MIN
  1. Baertschi, Sven
  2. Demko, Thatcher
  3. 2021 1st round pick (VAN)
Additional Details:
After 2020-2021, Vancouver's left side will look pretty thin and let's face facts, Seattle will likely take Demko if we leave the roster the way it is. They will also be a division rival so if we try to work out a deal to keep him they may not do us any favors. Minnesota is listening to offers on Brodin, they are looking for their goalie of the future, let's give it to them. Package Demko with a 1st round pick and a roster player like Sven Baertschi to clear cap (based on similar deals in the past). Maybe include a conditional pick if they request it for resigning him. I would try to resign Brodin as well afterwards. Real stabilizing force on the backend for the Canucks. He can be used in all game situations for them. Also has tons of playoff experience.

VAN
  1. Rakell, Rickard ($1,894,722 retained)
ANA
  1. Sutter, Brandon
  2. Virtanen, Jake [RFA Rights]
  3. Woo, Jett
  4. 2022 1st round pick (VAN)
Additional Details:
For this trade, you probably have to overpay a bit if you're Vancouver. Lots of teams will have interest in Rakell because of his low cap hit and I'm not sure if Anaheim is ready to move on from him. Anaheim definitely has a need for right shot Dmen and considering they are rebuilding, Jett Woo could be an attractive piece for them. Add in a sweetner like Jake Virtanen and they might bite. Anaheim has shown in the past that they are willing to take a chance on skilled forwards with character flaws and have had good results (ex: Daniel Sprong). If the money fits, I would try to resign him as well. He is very versatile and can play anywhere in the lineup. If it comes down to Pearson or Rakell, I'd go Rakell.

I think this is realistic, but I think you overpay quite a bit

youre going into the right direction with the Rakell trade. However, despite my personal like for Jett Woo his value is pretty low after this year in junior imo and if I were GMBM I dont move him for this package. Lastly, please dont cite past mistakes for reasons a trade might happen. Its a bad look. Sprong wasn't a success.

I don't hate it but I think we're okay with not throwing more bodies the goaltender position, especially when we're bringing in an overpaid winger we really don't have room for & moving (and retaining on) Brodin to do it.

Decent trade ideas but I don’t think VAN fans want to be without a 1st rd pick 3 years in a row...
Also I think Markstroms gonna go for more than 5 per

Overpay on trades especially for Rackell.
No cap to pay bonuses.
Trade Stecher & find a cheap 3rd pair RHD if not Rafferty.
