Maybe the new Arizona GM tries to cut ties with the old guard. Trouba is overpaid, just like OEL but the latter is three years older. Stepan is dumped to make cap space to (try to) sign Hall.

I like Fox very much, but he's no defensive juggernaut. DeAngelo is even worse in his own end. The Rangers would take a step backwards defensively if nothing else.

Also, if Trouba is good enough to get the Coyotes to take Smith in the deal, then why are the Rangers trading him? I think this stuff about Trouba being overpaid is overblown, the guy has had 3/4 of a season and we're already shipping him off. I'd like to think that qualifying round Trouba is a lot closer to what we can expect, but either way let's relax a little and give the guy a chance to prove himself.

I would not mind a smaller deal for Stepan at all, if the price is right it would be a nice grab....eeeexcept for the cap issues it brings on. Stepan makes too much for a player who would project to be a 3C during the course of his contract.

It would probably be smarter to bridge Strome with a modest raise (he'd still be RFA amazingly), and address it down the road. Then you'd have a better picture of who both Strome and Chytil really are.

Makes a bit more sense if you just drop Smith and swap OEL for Chychron.
