Rielly Trade

Created by: pundystar
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 25, 2020
Published: Aug. 25, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Love what Rielly brings but trying not to break up the top 4 up front. Rielly has a NMC that kicks in next season so this is the window to move him as resigning him after this deal might be tough with the cap. There's more depth on LD than RD. This gets a #1 RD on a long term deal that's still young (ie not a Doughty, Ellis, Pietrangelo, Subban, etc). Muzzin can handle top minutes on the left side, Dermott is ready for a chance at top 4 minutes, and Sandin rounds out the left side.

Carter adds some veteran depth that can get it done in the playoffs, brings a winning mindset, and can be a leader for the younger guys.

Kerfoot deal is a cap move could be moved to another team for a lower pick (OTT paying a higher pick so they don't have to pay for a LTIR player).

Kings decline. They don't get any cap relief for Carter in this trade and they don't get any picks. Toronto isn't going to qualify Rodrigues, so they could just sign him as a UFA if they wanted him (they don't). So really, they're retaining half of Carter's contract and giving up a 3rd (2nd if Clifford re-signs) and not getting anything useful in return.

No thanks.

Also, Doughty and Muzzin didn't play together very much. They tried that experiment for one season and it didn't work out so well. Muzzin mostly played on the 2nd paring with Martinez. Doughty played with Mitchell, then Scuderi, then McNabb, then Forbort.

Carter isn't part of the Kings retool, Johnsson is a young skilled winger not quite as good as Kapanen but close, and is the key piece going back to LA. Could lower the 3rd. As you can see, Clifford was not resigned, so no upgrade to a 2nd.

Carter is a veteran presence to mentor the kids. I agree he's on the trade block, but not if they have to retain 50% of his salary. Rebuilding teams look to acquire more draft picks, not send them away.

Johnsson isn't better than Iafallo or Kempe, so at best he's a 3LW on the Kings. They already have a logjam at bottom six forward, so they're not going to give up a draft pick to acquire a more expensive bottom six forward. If the Leafs are going to pass on re-signing Clifford, then the Kings can re-sign him themselves and now they have another bottom six LW that they didn't have to give up a pick for.

The Kings won't know that Toronto doesn't intend to re-sign Clifford when they make this trade, so they're not going to trade that pick.

Why would Florida consider trading Ekblad for Rielly?

Fair point on the status of the Clifford pick , revised the deal. I disagree on Johnsson being classified as a bottom 6 fwd, he could slot in on a second line. Would keep him based on age over Carter, but looking for a veteran presence that has won the cup.

$2.5m reasons when the owner wants to cut payroll costs.

I can't see LA trading Carter with retention. They don't need cap relief and he's valuable to the Kings for the same reason that you want him, experience. By the time the Kings need the space, his contract will be off the books. If a team wants to take on his full contract, they could have him for very little in return. If they have to retain half his salary, they'll just keep him.

I'm sure Johnsson could be a top-six guy somewhere, just not in LA. He's not going to unseat Iafallo or Kempe, so at best he's a 3LW for them.

Rielly is owed 10M over the next 2 years. Ekblad is owed 11M.

Reilly, $10m yes. Ekblad is owed $15m over the next two years plus another $20m in the subsequent three years between signing bonuses and base.

Signing bonuses have already been paid out. There is a less than zero chance that Florida would trade Ekblad for Rielly - a significantly inferior D, and a LHD when their need is RHD, for only 1M in savings over the next 2 years. If they want to trade Ekblad every other team in the league beats that trade by a mile.

Signing bonuses are paid July 1 of each year (2020 being the outlier due to the pandemic).

Signing bonuses were paid on July 1st 2020. There were a thousand news stories about it.

Over the remainder of the contract there's still $13m in bonuses to be paid.

Completely irrelevant. Ekblad is owed 11M over the next two years. Rielly 10M. There is zero chance that the Panthers would ever consider trading Ekblad for Rielly.
