Hank Buyout No Trades No UFA

Created by: AJC13
Team: 2020-21 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 26, 2020
Published: Aug. 26, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
With Lundqvist, Staal, Smith, and Shattenkirk's (buyout) contracts all coming off the books at seasons end. As well as the Seattle expansion draft. It's more likely this offseason in particular compared to other offseasons that NYR makes no trades, no Free agent signings, and only buys out Lundqvist to get a little more $$$ cap room.

Fast is resigned. Miller makes the team out of camp. Smith is sent to AHL - maybe recalled before end of season if needed. McKegg UFA resigned as 5th center on depth chart and starts year in AHL or as the extra forward.

Di Giuseppe RFA resigned and competes with Barron and Kravtsov for 1st recall from AHL if there's an injury to a winger for more than a game or two. Short term injuries McKegg fills in at wing.

Gotta love the 3rd line! Whom will all move up to the top 6 if there's injuries on the depth chart above them.

It's very possible Smith makes the team ahead of Hajek and Rykov.

Buying out Hank to resign Georgiev makes absolutely no sense. It barely saves a buck anyway. Hank is either retiring or is the back up next year and Georgiev gets flipped.

Buying Lundqvist out saves $3 million, which is exactly what the Rangers need in cap relief. But I'd have no problem trading Georgiev for a 1st round pick or a 2nd round pick and a good player or prospect and buying out Smith instead.

But would rather buy Lundqvist out than trade Georgiev for less. If Hank plans to retire at the end of his contract or is not sure what he plans to do and Gorton can't get fair market value for Georgiev, it makes no sense to flip Georgiev just to have to look for another goalie at the end of next season of less quality and higher $$$ contract over more years in term.

I expect Gorton to draft a center with NYR's 2nd 1st round pick from CAR. But if there's not a center to chose from that Gorton likes, he could instead take a LD like Guhle or Schneider that could make the NHL team out of camp.

Though Schneider shoots righty

No... In essence it's an offseason of standing pat and letting the kids develop for another year. Then after the expansion draft and lots of $$$ comes off the books in expiring contracts, then assess how the young players have developed and spend on UFA's accordingly.

Would love to see Gorton get Barkov or Eichel in trade with out costing too much, but it might be better to go the UFA route the following season.

I don’t get how that makes sense. We don’t need a superstar center, we need a solid 2nd line center who is capable of a great two way game. Barkov and Eichel are too expensive to acquire. There’s no point in trading all our young guys and picks for guys who are either paid $10 mil or gonna need to be resigned at probably $10 mil. It doesn’t work for Toronto, so why on Earth would it work here.

I agree completely. Like I explained, would only want Barkov or Eichel if it didn't cost too much, regardless it might be better to go the UFA route after next season - if needed.

I also agree about instead acquiring a sold two way center - if it doesn't cost too much in trade. Said center could center Panarin to his left and Strome (needed center depth) to his right. Fast would not be resigned and the cap savings would be used for the center.

I very much like the 4 centers listed above. It's just that if one or two get injured, the Rangers could become a team with only one or two lines that could score consistently. Though maybe LaFreniere could play center, like I've heard from some people suggesting so.
