Both players also save the Coyotes a lot of money. Andersen is only paid 1m and Johnsson got a 4.3m bonus this year plus 700,000 in salary and they would have already paid him his 1 million for next season so they reduce salary while gaining talent. Unfortunately, he is thinking like a fan not like a GM.

Anderson put up a .909 behind bad defense and Kuemper who's getting paid 500k less put up an arguably vezina contending .928 behind equally bad defense. And Kuemper is under contract for a year longer than Anderson. After 2020-21 Arizona would have to pony up $6-6.5 million for Anderson, or let him walk. Either way, Kuemper is the better goalie, on a better contract with better term.

Hjalmarsson isn't fantastic for his cap hit, but he's still a great PK guy and shutdown D-man. And he's only signed for another year. The last thing Arizona needs is an overpaid left winger like Johnsson because they already have about 20 of those. But it's especially bad if replacing Hjalmarsson with Johnsson comes at the expense of one of the leagues best goalies who's stolen them tons of games over the last two seasons. It;s just an awful idea for Arizona.

The coyotes don't care so much about the financial aspect of base salaries as they do cap hit. It's pretty obvious that from a logical standpoint, any smart GM would decline this. But yeah of course I'm not thinking like a GM.

Hey by the way good luck signing Mikheyev to 3x1.2 and have fun with Rodrigues on the 3rd line. That should result in another 1st round exit.

Andersen only makes 1m next season. Johnsson also saves them money and he's not overpaid the Leafs don't need him so he's expendable. I get you don't care how much the team spends but that's why I said just for myself. The owners of the Yotes are getting decimated financially so swapping players who don't get paid their cap hit while getting younger in Johnsson makes a lot of sense. They have to pay Kuemper his full cap hit and this way they don't while still having a quality NHL caliber starting goaltender makes a lot of sense and improves the coyotes profitablility. They are pretty much just as good but more profitable and if they do go the rebuild route then it helps pay under the minimum.

Ohh, take a poke at the Leafs because you don't think that the current situation has had an effect on a corporation that's based on banking, real estate, media, restaurants, food, casinos, and professional sports. Every one of those took a massive hit. Making your NHL team expenses cheaper and more profitable is absolutely important.

The owners don't care if he's getting paid 5 million , 1 million or 14 cents. It's the cap hit and level of play that matters. Arizona loses this trade if they let Andersen go after 2020-21 for sure. And if they want to resign him, his signing bonus is worth $4 million. Add that to his base salary and he's back up to $5 million. Johnsson is injury prone which, again, is the very last thing this team needs. And even if he isn't overpaid, 3.4 million for 20 points and 40 games is just simply not good enough. Value is still very off and the Yotes still decline.
