Not Trading Reinhart

Created by: deleted_x_213212
Team: 2020-21 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 8, 2020
Published: Sep. 8, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Ok, let's try this without trading Reinhart. The first thing I did was sign him. I'll go ahead and make the dangerous assumption that he's not trying to leave asap.

On top of that, I'll target doing the absolute bare minimum (an approach which Buffalo fans are more than familiar with) to sort of at least pretend to fill needs: 2C and LD.

This team still sucks but that's probably going to be the case anyway. At least I didn't burn any assets overpaying for Domi or either of the Stromes. Competitive window is at least 2-3 years away. Eichel has no real leverage to leave (though Reinhart does).

Get ready to be bored.

Trades
BUF
  1. Raanta, Antti
  2. Stepan, Derek
Additional Details:
Taking on a ton of cap for one year. This provides a plug at 2C (or something resembling 2C) that can be flipped at the deadline with retention and an injury prone time-share goaltender. No one is taking Stepan at $6M with no retention other than a desperate team like this. So if the Coyotes do want to move him...

Hutton goes back to somewhat mitigate the cap impact. Sabres send a pick back acknowledging they're getting the marginally useful players back and to motivate the Coyotes to move the players together.

The question: should this trade target Schmaltz or Kuemper instead? Is a 2nd too much to send for taking $8M net cap back? No clue. Let's see what the self-proclaimed experts think.

Is Stepan even an upgrade over Marcus Johansson? I get Mojo is better at LW, but Stepan’s point totals have fallen off significantly.
I’m also not expecting much either I have a feeling the 2c will be Alexander Wennberg when Columbus probably buys him out.

Mojo is not a natural Center, Stepan is. He's one of the better FO guys in the league and a descent 2 way player. He also has good size to him. Much better fit than Mojo at Center.

The only way I see this trade happening is if Rossi or Perfetti are still on the board for BUF at #8. If they are gone I would trade the pick to get a true #2 Center. I think some cap needs to be retained from ARI for this trade to happen, ESPECIALLY with the 2nd pick. IF we eat all that cap you can toss the pick out.

I'd rather have Kuemper.

But there needs to be MUCH MORE movement than this, in order for this team to be any good this season...or else Jack Eichel will be gone next year.

Right on. This isn't what I want to see but I could see it happening. I'd rather keep the pick then and eat the 1 year of salary/cap if this is all they do (let's assume they get Perfetti for the moment as unlikely as that seems).

Definitely agree on both points. Would love to see some turnover and real change but not sure they get it done or even want to. They should be able to but it really depends on what Pegula/Krueger (and to some extent Adams) are thinking. I could see something like this where they do something that seems to address their problems to see to the fans. Then again, I could also see them spending capital with wild abandon in a misguided attempt to compete now.

What I want to see is a targeted approach to get Krueger style players.
