That D without Pesce is awful. I wouldn’t be totally against trading Pesce, especially with his shoulder issues, but a replacement would have to be signed or acquired.

I dont have an issue with Skjei but we need Gardiner to play like he has his entire career before last year

Yeah i mean there is cap space to bring in a veteran right shot defenseman to stabilize it. Even tho i didnt love Vatanen i wouldnt be opposed to bringing him back on the second pair if we made some space.

He had back to back 20 goal seasons before this year. He never clicked with the canes but i think he could really fit well in Florida since they will likely lose Hoffman and Dadonov. Maybe a 3rd is to high but the canes can certainly find a taker for him, the cap hit isnt extreme

Re-sign Vatanen or even TvR. Slavin and Hamilton might need to be split. The D, as it currently (ie before the offseason) is, is rock-solid without Pesce. Fleury is a very good defender, but I would be wary of Jake Bean being handed an opening day spot.

I actually like Gardiner, but at this point he’s an overpaid 3rd pair guy. That second pair would get eaten alive. If the Canes are dealing Pesce, they had best be sure of 2 things:

1-Hamilton extending
2-a replacement 2nd pair RD

I actually think it’s more likely they end up dealing Hamilton, if his ask is too high.

I have no problem with Bean on the 3rd pair. Time to sink or swim, need to see what they have in him for expansion draft purposes. He’s certainly had nothing left to prove at the AHL level.
