Wait a second, Dano and a first to Winterpeg for a rental. Now, Dano returns in exchange for another first plus is given a 4 year/$10M deal? It appears Chicago would have been better off to simply keep and utilize the kid after they originally traded for him in the sad trade. Good one.

I think they would have been better off keeping him

Bowman hit a home run the previous year in trading for a rental (Vermette) who helped the Hawks win in 2015. Not so much last season.

I'm fine with the idea that Dano and a 1st is too much for a rental. If that's the position, I understand it. Dano played a lot @ Columbus and Q didn't think he was good enough for the Hawks. I'm willing to bet a decent chunk of change that if he were on the team this year...He'd still be in Rockford. His style didn't mesh with what Q wants. Wasn't responsible enough defensively and turned over the puck when he had his chances in the NHL...at least for the Hawks.

Hey, bud. It begs to question then, are Bowman and Quenneville on the same page in terms of personnel decisions/transactions? Dano was acquired in a big trade with the Jackets. He showed promise there but, like you said, never seemed to fit in with Q's system. Could there have been a different part coming back that made better sense from the Hawks' perspective, or was he, in retrospect, acquired with notion of being quickly dealt as he was?

    Complicated answer...so here's my take.
Are Q and Bowman on the same page - For the most part Yes. Stan just knows that Q won't play simply anyone he trades for or even 1st round draft picks. A few examples below.
Rundblad for a 2nd rounder and never really given consistent play time....Screams Bowman's guy that Q wouldn't play due to mistakes. He had a shot and STILL HAS IT, but isn't responsible on the defensive end.
Nick Leddy - 16th overall pick. Was always able to bring the puck up the ice with speed. His Ice time consistently decreased year after year because he wasn't responsible on the defensive end. He's gotten better since, but I still don't think he should be a #2 on a team that hopes to contend. Better off the puck moving Dman on the 2nd pair.
Tuevo - 18th overall pick and VERY HIGHLY touted. But in the NHL he bounced around every where showed flashes of high end skill, but was never very physical. Q gave the gritty Shaw the chances to play on the 1st line.
Dano - Played well with Columbus and touted as the best piece coming back from the Saad trade, but he never really got a chance with the Hawks to be fair to him.

In my opinion Q doesn't hate rookies...he hates rookies that aren't "responsible" which is a lot of rookies in general AND they get hooked quickly/sent back to Rockford overnight. Can they make mistakes, yes to a point. Saad was far from perfect and it's hard to say Artemi never made any mistakes last year. Shaw was a 5th round pick...played early...and often! A lot goes into this. Being able to learn and apply lessons learned on ice the VERY NEXT GAME (or two) is extremely important.

As for the trade chips...Hind sight is always 20/20. I'd still get a high end draft pick. Other teams will still value a former 1st round pick. Yes, there should be discussions between the two... "Hey Q, if I get this guy will you give him a shot?" "Yup, looks like he has some talent. Let's give him a chance" Now (2) 1st round picks for a rental is a TON, but if Q made up his mind...no reason to keep Leddy for 5 years while he only gets further and further into the dog house.

You guys somehow got wrapped up in that Dano trade, but that Montreal trade is absolutely terrible.

Good posts from the last two guys!!

Quenneville's system is not an easy one to grasp, even for established vets. You are right in saying it is all about trust, exo. Shaw got it despite numerous bad penalties/extracurriculars in his tenure. TvR is another youngster who is depended on;responsible. I was really hoping Stephen Johns would get a long look but he will have his day in Big D.

To the Weise-Fleschmann trade, very tough to give away Danault. It seemed like he got it after his callup and was relied on as a real good depth piece at an affordable cap hit. Kero is a similar player who hasn't been jettisoned yet.

Yet as the new season commences, Chicago will plug any holes and do their best to compete for the Cup.

You're 100% correct. Add it to the list. Weise was supposed to be a major contributor, but stunk even when he got his shots. As for Shaw's penalties...I think they way Q views it...That's not a mental error like missing an assignment or turning over the puck. It's being aggressive trying to do the right thing, but your stick got too high.
