2. we traded a 3rd to get him what makes you think you can get a 2nd by trading him to another team

1) I don't think he was traded to get a backup,
2) see Scandella trade.

LOL. We got Edmundson as a safety on LD in case Romanov is not as ready as we thought he was. That makes Mete 5th on LD behind Kulak. He will not surpass Petry on th RD, Mete is out. And they got Allen to be the backup, not just to switch a 3rd for a 2nd, this is not NHL 04.

Bergevin has flipped a player in the past with retained salary to move up in the draft...

So call it what you will, it has happened, in this year... so... yeah.

EDIT: For those of you that clearly forgot

January 2, 2020 - Montreal trades a 4th round to Buffalo for Scandella

February 18, 2020 - Montreal trades Scandella with 50% salary retention to St. Louis for a 2nd and a conditional 4th (condition on re-signing, which he did)

So, bergevin flipped a 4th into a 2nd based on salary retention and St. Louis' need for depth defense. NHL 04 has nothing on NHL 20 GM mode apparently.

Okay yeah I understand where youre coming from but that Scandella trade was Bergevin taking advantage of an asset to get picks because the team wasnt making the playoffs. It wasnt his plan all along when he got Scandella from BUF. Time passes, things change. Maybe he'll trade Allen at the deadline if the team still doesnt make the playoffs and Allen's value has went up to a 2nd rounder. But that is never the plan in the beginning, to get a player and trade him right away for a better pick.

it was 6 days before the deadline....

we can speculate all we want, but there a few teams who need to solidify goaltending, and montreal has the cap room this year to do it.

He also did the same with Mason from Winnipeg, and got Armia for clearing their cap room.

He also shipped Fleishmann (on a 1 year) and Weise to Chicago for Danault and a pick that turned into Romanov.

Montreal's season depends on whether Suzuki and KK continue their playoff style hockey to carry the team offensively. Not whether we get backup goaltending for 1 year only.
Allen is gone after the season, can't see him wanting to be a backup.

The only way I see Allen staying, is if Montreal pulls a pittsburgh in the expansion and pays for Seattle to take Price (which is a possibility given he goes back to the west coast every summer and may waive to go there) and Allen serves as the stop gap until Primeau is ready.

it's definitely interesting, I still feel once the goalie market has settled at the beginning of Free agency, then if there are buyers, I see Allen getting shipped.

Yeah I know all the great trades Bergevin made, but this is not that. This is him getting a decent backup that can start 30 games and win at least 15-18. Even if it's just for one year. We got Primeau that will be ready to take those 30 games after that.

Okay, so, with a glut of goalies on the market, Bergevin had to trade a 3rd rather than signing a FA.

Anderson, Greiss, Elliott or Smith could've all come cheaper without giving up a pick and been a fine stop gap in the 20-25 game range.

I just find it curious why you'd get a potential starter elsewhere (Ottawa, Detroit, Calgary, Buffalo, Edmonton, etc...) and relegate him to backup?

Dude, you are stubborn. You are lucky if more than one goalie on the market wants to sign in MTL as a backup. Plus he hasnt been lucky with signings in the last few years. He paid the price to get a 1b, because thats what we desperatly need in Mtl. Of course if someone offers a 1Rounder for Allen, then he will trade him.
