Description
Rumours are circulating regarding OEL to Edm for Nurse as the basis of a trade. OEL is linked to Edm's coaching staff and international success with Larsson. This wouldn't be ideal for Edmonton due to long-term Cap impacts, but this is an exercise to see how this could work. Part of the rumour has Nurse then flipped to NYR for K'Andre Miller + a 1st. The source of the rumour apparently heard this from an Oiler staff member and said they called the Lucic-Neal trade last year.

I don't like the Fleury deal so much and I expect a lot of flak, but Neal has a more palatable buy-out structure than Fleury which is why Vegas might be open to this trade.

With the Benning for Brown trade, I can already hear the comments. But Benning is one of the best 3rd pairing RHD and he is good enough to cover the 2RD on occassion. He would be better than any of the right side D in Ott right now and RHD are a less common commodity. As well, Brown is replaceable via Free Agency.

Koivu is a mentor to help with JP's return and Granlund is from JP's hometown team and a long-time Koivu teammate. He may accept a 1 yr team friendly deal to rejoin his fellow Finn teammate Koivu and to play with McDavid to pump his numbers for a more lucrative deal in 2021-22.

Are the two Detroit trades combined so it’s like this?

EDM - Kassian, EDM 1st
DET - 3rd SJS, 2nd EDM & WSH, 4th EDM

For VGK, I wouldn’t do that and just find someone to take Fleury on as the cap space would be used on Lehner. Possibly use a team like Detroit as a middle man to retain.

Fleury's even worse no cap

Most overrated goalie of the decade, makes 7M, and rapidly declining.

No, they are separate trades. The 1st for the picks would be a 1st day of the Draft deal, the Kassian deal would be the following day at the Draft.

I will edit the trade details to show the pick #'s

The Neal trade was discussed ad naseum last year in E-Town, the benefit is it is a superior buy out structure to Fleury's. Vegas will not buy Fleury out, but they must get rid of his contract somehow.

Outside of Colorado I see no other trade partner for Fleury's contract, but everyone knows Vegas is desperate to move him. This is not a normal year, so unless there is a really creative deal, you are not going to like the actual deal they end up making.

That's why Vegas adds a 2nd (they have 2 2021 2nds, so it is plausible) they are painted into a corner and have to do something, but their options are extremely limited.

Fleury would be suited to a secondary role and reduced workload to ~35 games. He is an upgrade over Smith and has a championship pedigree.

He would also help with the new injection of leadership on this roster.

And perhaps there is an opportunity to move Fleury to Seattle in the Expansion Draft next year.....

Granlund is less likely, but his results weren't amazing. Maybe given the NHL economy his options are limited and decides a cheaper 1 yr deal playing with McDavid will boost his market value as a UFA in 2021-22.

Buffalo accepts. Not sure why you wanna trade your hardest working and arguably best defensive forward for a 7th.......

You may want to check your facts before you comment.

Goal scoring is the hardest thing to do in hockey. Neal scored the same number of goals in fewer games than Hintz, Kuznetsov, DeBrusk, Staal, van Riemsdyk, Barzal, Benn, Connolly and Larkin. Decent company I'd say, but his contract is what?

Neal was the 4th best player on the team vs Chicago behind McDavid, Draisaitl & Nuge. He was one of the top scorers in league but got banged up in early December and then got injured in January. He clearly was hurting the last half of the season. He is still an above average NHL goal scorer, he ranked 90th, which puts him as a top 6, if not top 3 scoring level on every team in the league.

Fleury had the 18th best save percentage of all starters, so he was a below average NHL goalie in 2020. The are 7 UFA goalies who performed above or at his level who will be cheaper to sign and there are also about 6 or 7 cheaper 'tenders on the trading block.

So when you look at it more closely, this deal is great for Vegas and for Fleury. It is not so great of a deal for Edmonton.

For the record, I love the player, but he doesn't move the needle at 5v5, which is Edmonton's biggest deficiency.

The purpose of the trade is to clear salary for more important positions. Maybe a 6th would be the ask for Archie, but he isn't really a 3rd liner, he is an expensive 4th liner (doesn't score enough for a higher role).
