Hjarmarsson has reportedly told the coyotes that he won’t waive his trade clause period.

Coyotes definitely reject 20M in Lundqvist , Smith , and Trouba for 14M in OEL and Stepan Coyotes cant afford that

Smith's only for a year though. If they want to re-gain draft picks without trading their young core, they're gonna have to take on short-term cap dumps

Trouba has pretty much the same contract as OEL and id take OEL over Trouba

Trouba is only owed $2M this year. And 8,6,8,6,6 after that.
OEL is $4M remaining this year, then $10.5, 10.5, 10.5, 8, 5.25, 5.25

This year, probably the most important: they send out $6M obligation for Trouba (2), Smith (2.35), Hank (4.5, if he plays). After that they definitely save money.

Managing the cap this year would be extremely difficult. I think you tell the Rangers that Hank is their problem, not yours. Or at least make them retain. Without him, it saves you over a million this year, and substantially in the future even with him.

I also think if Arizona is eating Smith and/or Hank for the year, they'll want a NHL-ready guy like Howden or Gauthier included.

Teams struggling financially don't have the ability to take on cap dumps.

Edited Sep. 22, 2020 at 6:26 p.m.. Reason: added correction
The point at which the Rangers trade would make sense for Arizona is leaving Lundqvist out and retaining $1.45 million (1/3) on Smith. But that leaves NY in a deep hole a few years down the line.

I don't think that this is a workable scheme no matter how you massage it.

Edit: I had forgotten that the signing bonuses have been paid for this year, which has a huge impact. Arizona owes the three players $8 million for the balance of this year and would owe the three Rangers only $850,000 more. That outlay this year is certainly better than the $15 million difference between OEL's compensation and Trouba's package. I withdraw my criticism of this idea. You've really uncovered a good plan for Arizona. Now the question is, would it be good for NY?
