Why not? the Rangers aren't going to want to pay Hank 8.5mil to be their 3rd string goalie. In getting Eriksson they save cap space and get a player that will actually play.

The difference is, Eriksson is under contract for how many more years????? While Hank is on his last year. As someone said above. Buying out Hank is 5.5m this year and 1.5m next year. I'll take that over being saddled with Loui's contract any day. Unless you want to really sweeten the pot for us to take the longer contract (and even then, if you added a 1st, I still would be disappointed if NYR mgmt actually accepted it.
